Howdy NeXT users.
I recently acquired a NeXTstation Turbo Color. The previous owner said one day it just quit working. When it's all hooked up and I press the power button I get nothing. No clicks, hums, pops or anything at at. I popped the case open to see what the deal was and I didn't see anything immediately wrong but replaced PRAM/CMOS battery anyway.
Upon further inspection I noticed that one of the silver capacitors (close to where the power supply plugs into the motherboard) appeared to have leaked. From what I observed it hasn't affected anything else but I don't know if that's the case. I also reseated the PROM chip and unplugged the hard drive to see if it would power up with less resistance to no avail.
My supreme worry is that the capacitor leak shorted out the board or the power supply. I'm assuming both parts are expensive to replace and hard to find. I'm kind of at a loss here and could use some direction.
If the problem is in fact that capacitor, should I attempt to make the fix myself (I do have a little electronics repair experience) or should I leave it to a legit pro.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Pictures to come.
You might also want to check the battery.... some of my boxes would refuse to start with a flat battery.
I think you can attempt to replace the capacitor yourself. You should probably test the power supply to make sure it's OK before plugging things in again.
If you need a power supply, I can supply one cheaply. I also have some spare Turbo Color motherboards... not sure what they're worth to be honest. I also have a lot of non-Turbo boards, so I can let you have one of those cheaply if you really need something.
