Hi all,

I'm attempting to install a new harddrive I just got from the lovely Rob at Blackholeinc. However, I've fallen at the first hurdle. I've taken the back off, but I'm not sure what to do now. I've attached a picture below - I've since removed that very dusty filter, and I presume that's the optical drive with the hard drive to the right (or above it if it were the right way up).

What I can't see is how to release or pull out the drives. Are there any guides to pulling these machines apart online? Can anyone offer any advice?

Many thanks in advance, Tony.

You need to remove the motherboard first.  Pull out part way and unplug the cables from the board so you can pull the board out the rest of the way.  Recommend you be using a static wrist strap so you don't static shock anything.  Once the motherboard is out you will see on each side of the metal hard drive bay some screws that hold that whole metal housing to the front of the case.  You need a certain torx style (I think) screwdriver to get those screws out.  Once out, the whole metal tray slides out of your case.  Then you can play around with removing the drives, etc...  Install is in reverse.

Hope that helps.

2 hex screws at the bottom of the power supply. remove the motherboard, those screws, then the entire assembly will come out, allowing access to the screws for the hdd etc.

judging from the amount of dust in there, I'd say the optical drive will be dead

I thought along with the two bottom screws (which I forgot about because mine did not have them grin) there are some at the frontside where the slots are also?  Maybe those only come off when replacing the slot covers?  I seem to remember they held the whole metal sled to the front.  Been a little while since I popped one open.

Only the two on the bottom. What I do is sit the cube on it's feet, and leverage the power supply with my fingers. When I put the power supply back in, I sit the cube face down which makes it easy to slot in.

Thanks everyone - the motherboard has now been removed, the screws beneath the power supply removed and the whole central section slid out smoothly. I've removed the old 5 1/4" 1.5G drive - and how now hit another snag. The new drive is 3 1/2", and the screw holes don't line up. Are brackets that convert one bay type to the other easily available? Any NeXT specific gotchas?

Many thanks everyone for your help so far!

Hello : I didn't realised you had the full size drives, I just located some real nice industrial 3 1/2 to 5 1/4 in hard drive mounting brackets that work great in cubes , I have for $10 , if anyone is interested just drop me a note.  Just saw this post , glad it arrived down under OK! If you ever have any questions you can also contact me directly at sales@blackholeinc.com, I'm glad you have it up and running and the drive I sent just worked , these guys on the forum are good , yeah another cube resurected !

On another note,  I'm tinkering with my Mac Mini as I want to install Openstep under parallels , I have version 4 thought I would try it first and also have VMware 2.  I have VMware working but  am trying to figure out how to get the install rolling under parallels by mounting floppy images like I did for VMware or does it require a USB floppy? and debating on weather to upgrade to Parallels 6 and see which version I like better running openstep. So I'll check for threads  here on the forums next for great advice and help , thanks all.Best Regards Rob Blessin :)  :)
