for some unknown reason, I decided to boot up my cube
It starts, but looks like hard drive failed
I see message something like can not determine disk size
I do hear the drive head seeking, as if it tries to find something that doesn't exist
anyone have good experience with brand/model of hard drive that'll work on these ancient machine
Any 50pin SCSI 2 drive would work? Or I should avoid some drives (Qauntum)?
Next step would be installing NextStep 3.3... Any patch/hot fix I should put on?
Also, how to tell if my cube would boot off CD?
I do have floppy drive (hope it work!), and the install floppy/CD. However, boot off and install from CD is so convenient
Thanks!
Depends on the Cube. If it's a turbo 040 it should be able to boot on cd, otherwise you'll need floppies... These days just any drive will do. Try a 2 or 4G and you'll be find. Disklabels seemed necessary back in the day but I think this was solved by the time of NeXTSTEP 3.3.
