would the boot floppy for NS 3.2 allow me to get to a prompt?

I need to reset my ethernet settings! I set some things up as static, like ip, netmask and some other things and now the system complains that its searching for its host network server or something, and for some reason I cant bypass it.

JeHorn,

I don't know exactly what your setup is, are you running a headless slab? If you have a monitor, you can boot it into single-user mode. You don't need a floppy. My NeXT is not currently set up, so I cannot try it.

You need to boot into the BIOS to get the "NeXT>" prompt. I think it was CTRL-CMD-~ or something like that, I know it from muscle memory though :-) Then give it the command:

NeXT> bsd -s

Once in single user mode, you can mount your HDD if it isn't already mounted and go into the /etc directory and edit your hostconfig file with your favorite terminal editor. Your problem is easily fixable if it's only a gooned-up hostconfig. Once you get a config that works, recommend making .bak files before any more tweaking.

Hope this helps,

Brian

Since you're asking so many questions, could you please read this document first before posting here? It explains pretty much everything you need to know: http://www.cilinder.be/docs/next/NeXTStep/3.3/nsa/

Good luck!

Hi!

Thanks for the link!!! :)

I have one more question before I leave yall alone for awhile. Sorry about the many posts... I go overboard sometimes.  :(

I changed the getty settings to boot in console mode, how do I get back into GUI mode?

this is commented out in getty:
#console /usr/lib/NextStep/loginwindow NeXT on secure

Don't have a box running just this second but uncommenting that line may do the trick.
