Cosmetically the cubes are a little rough(paint chipped).

Seems like the flock of birds box is a motion tracking system. I'm not sure it's specific to the NeXT, but probably not.

Yeah I was trying to find the relationship to "Flock of Birds" and NeXT.

We also found a virtual reality 3d glove and helmet and some other stuff with this NeXT equipment. Just really weird.

Yeah, Flock of Birds was one of the early position/rotation trackers. Used with early VR gear like VPL Eyephones and Datagloves on SGIs. I think I have a bunch of the wired sensors somewhere....
