I know folks including myself have slot load CD ROM drives in our Cubes but wondered if NeXT ever officially had a CD ROM inside the Cube?
I own a couple external NeXT CD ROM drive, the old caddy style, and wondered if NeXT had these units (less the case and all that of course) inside the Cube so you could replace bad MO drives and have a CD ROM instead.
Just curious is all.
My slot load works but it is tan colored so I need to paint it black one day or, if the NeXT caddy load CD will work, maybe I will stick one of those inside instead.

I don't know if it was ever offered, but one of my cubes has a NeXT branded CDROM drive in it. Works like a charm :)

Is it the same drive as the unit from the external CD rom drives from NeXT?
Mind posting a picture of the slot the drive is in so I can see what she looks like?
Also, do you know what it took to connect this drive inside the Cube? Just regular p/s in the cube drives it?

I believe it's a unit from the external CDROM drives. It has the same Sony part number etc. It connects using a regular power connector and is 50 pin SCSI, so no issues at all. In the pictures on flickr you can see that I have a NeXT dual drive SCSI cable I used.

Very cool. Thanks! Tj
I believe an internal CD-ROM drive was an option when the 040 cube was introduced.
Edit: Yes it was. (

Wow, didn't realize it was an internal drive. Finally nice to know that someone discovered it! Great find!
Let me dig out the catalog and see if one was offered.
Reading through the 1991 price list I find something that says:
CDROM Drive N3007 $895
For NeXTcube only
So I guess that was an internal drive... the external ones work fine with slabs.
