Hi,
I have 3 complete systems. Turbo Colour (or color), Mono slab and Dimension Cube. Every couple of years I get them out of storage and boot them all up.
Now, after the "Testing System" stage, my turbo colour system goes into white-screen ROM monitor with the message "Default boot device not found".
At first I thought it might be due to a broken SCSI socket pin on the motherboard but that hasn't stopped it booting fine in the past. I repaired the pin anyway but no difference.
If I mount the hard drive in my mono slab that boots fine. And if I mount the mono slab's drive in the colour slab, I get the same "Default boot device not found".
Normally, if you boot a NeXT with the hard drive fully disconnected, you get a "Disk Error" graphic just after the "Testing System" stage, i.e. they don't usually go into the ROM monitor, not until you force them to.
I have tried booting from a fresh 3.3 floppy and CD using an original NeXT CDROM drive that I know works just fine. When I do that, the colour slab hangs at the "Waiting for drive to come ready......" stage and retries repeatedly.
So I'm wondering what's up. Has anyone encountered this behaviour before?
Thanks

This is a silly suggestion, but perhaps it is a dead battery and the NVRAM settings got wiped out? Have you tried typing bsd at the prompt?
