did they just show a NeXT CUBE in the olympics ceremony?
Yep. Tim Berners Lee used one to develop the initial browser/editor.

It doesn't appear to be his box, and it doesn't seem to be running anything though...

Doesn't it seem strange that the screen is entirely blank? I don't even see a boot screen...

That's exactly what I thought... a real shame that it was not functional, even though it was a very short stint.
Maybe it's shorted out - looks like the top of the table and the top of the Cube are wet!
the CRT monitor (seems to be an N4000A) isn't even connected to the cube (port on the cube appears to be unused if one looks closer) and there's light coming out where the microphone resides on the monitor so they just placed a lightbulb in the monitor. I guess....
edit: video-port has a cable attached but there's no power cable going into the cube...
Yeah, I noticed that it deosn't have both cables going to the cube. Ah well, still a big day for us NeXT folk

I sent them a working cube and a working slab as they requested! They kept me in the dark saying it was for a play about Tim Berners Lee LOL . The Slab was ment to be a backup working box in case the cube failed and everything was in good condition If there is a way to burn that screen in it should show NeXTSTEP running unless there was shenanigans on their end. Had I of known it was for the opening ceremonies I would have flown to their side of the pond and made sure it all worked ! Best regards Rob Blessin
It occurred to me that they might have had the camera set up to show him in the dark, and the nice bright screen simply washed out.
Anyone know Sir Tim? :)

hmmm I know I sent the cube and backup to a prop house address Tanya Bowd was my contact and all I was told is it was going to be used for a play about Tim Berners Lee in London which they wouldnt tell me the name of under secrecy! I dont know if it is the same company and if you look at the cube in the ceremonies has nice new paint and the screen is set up different then the one i sent . It says they have 2 in stock and i had sent a spare slab for back up , i envisioned an ongoing play with the NeXTs being moved on and off stage not a one night 1 billion viewer audience with rehearsals lol
Now as far as the dot matrix printer configuration through a dos laptop that sounds like innovative madness im guessing using the apps dots or samba or a custom as the printer driver but if it was from the command line like it says looking at the printer output closely is puzzling as their are random numbers letters instead of asteriks but I'm sure that is what happens then it would beat your paper is jammed in your printer chiming out on most NeXT laser printers with the intake roller or exit gear problem.
In theory If the dots pixels output were converted to light up led pads instead of printing on a piece of paper that would explain the mystery of the scaled up audience led "tweet" Tim sent "this is for everyone" At any rate
I'll drop him a note and see if he is the man behind the curtain like the Wizard and will fill me in on details about the tweet. It'll be cool to know that our cube is now in a museum as well.

why not? it seems there were two cubes: the one TBL sat in front of and another one that was used to shoot a short film sequence to be displayed on the big screens in the stadium.
So then why did they buy another one if they already had one?
