The early NeXT OS (version 0.8 to 0.9 or so) had a black hole instead of a trash can... I'm picking this is a pun on that :)

He's apparently the art director or somesuch at Adafruit. Some of those guys (artistic EE-types) get off on imagery.
It's interesting and all, but the dude has considerable electronics skills (http://johngineer.com). It's not evident in this 'piece'.
