Hi All,
I'm looking at my options for getting an 030 cube connected to my network. I was just wondering what solutions others are using? Has anyone tried using an appletalk to ethernet bridge? I had purchased one for use with an old mac, but I notice nextstep also has support.
Thanks,
Brian
Why go via Appletalk? Just get one of the old thin wire to twisted pair converters or one of the old routers that supports thin wire (3com, etc.). Get some coax, a pair of T connectors and some terminators.
I have an old ethernet hub that I use with mine. A length of coax, 2 Ts, 2 terminators, done.
I bought a cat 5 to 10 base2 converter. For extra mobility I have that attached to a wireless access point.
Thanks all for the replies. I think you've sold me on a 10b2 to ethernet converter.
Hey Barcher174, did you ever get your Cube connected to the network?
Yes, the converter boxes work well and can still be found cheaply.

Nice. I ordered one last week with the whole set of BNC connectors/terminators. What are you using your network connection to do?
I mostly use it to load software. I have an FTP server set up on my Mac and use that to download things to the next. Also I've found it's faster to compile command line stuff using a telnet session on the cube than when I do it from the GUI.

Yeah, that's my first goal - getting it connected to my Mac to load up software. Definitely want to get OmniWeb on there so I can get on the web (no matter how excruciating and incomplete it might be for such an old system).
Then I want to tackle email... Saw some good threads on here to help with that. If I can get the Cube to be productive on the modern web in same way, shape, or form, then I'll be thrilled. I'd really get a kick out being able to email from a NeXT system. And I'll really be able to justify keeping it up and running in my NYC-sized apartment... heheh.
I share your fascination with using these machines for modern communication. Try out the lynx browser I've compiled here:

Wow, that's fantastic, thank you for sharing (and creating) it! Looking forward to trying it this week once I receive the final piece of network hardware. I love how active and productive the NeXT community is. I'm trying to learn as much as I can so I can participate and contribute here too.
