All,

One of the things I don't miss from 90's computing is oppressive fan noise. Today I installed a 120mm fan from silent X ( EFX-12-15T ) into my cube. It's rated for 75 CFM at < 15dBA. What sold me on this model is the temp probe. You can place it next to the CPU and the fan will speed up/down based on the temperature. As far as fit, it was about 2/3 the height of the original fan and every other dimension was an exact fit. So you end up with a little more room for SCSI cables and such. At any rate, I think it's ~$10 well spent.

How did the mounting to the back panel work out?  And power supplied by the 4-pin molex disk power connector, not the coiled fan cable?

Yes, I'm using a splitter from the HDD power. The mounting holes and footprint matched perfectly to the original fan.

I know its an impractical stance, but when I enjoy retro hardware, I like all the noise and what not that comes with it.

I like hearing the big hard drive slowly spin up, as well as the loud fan.  As long as the SCSI drives run, no CF in my cube!

Still, thanks for sharing your fan find.

Not for nothing, but a modern fan with filter helps to keep dust out of the MO drives. I've installed 120mm fans in all my cubes, blowing air into the back of the cube, and put a filter over the fan.
