I recently upgraded to VMWare Fusion 6.0.1 on OS X Mavericks. Initially, the NeXT STEP 3.3 VM crashed after booting when the login screen was about to be displayed. I was able to fix this by changing the virtual machine type to from Free BSD to MS-DOS and setting the compatibility to Hardware Version 6. It is now running fine.
