Hello all,

I just assembled a NeXTStation Color Turbo system with N4006 monitor.  I have an ADB soundbox and ADB keyboard/mouse with gtnicol's help.  Separately,I bought a 4006 Color Megapixel 17" monitor.  I'm not sure if the monitor is bad but it won't stay on.

Here's what happens:

I turn on the monitor with the switch on the front.  I can hear/feel the degaussing occur and the green light on the front momentarily turns on but it then shuts off.  I turn on the NeXTStation and it comes on but there's no life from the monitor and the green light on the monitor remains off.

Turning the monitor off/on does nothing after this.  If I completely power down (via powerbar) some time later I can repeat this so the monitor degausses and shuts own.  If I blew a fuse in the monitor (if it has one) I figure I would not see any action at ll (degaussing).

I opened up the monitor (love the built in adjustment tool) but visually, it looks okay but dusty as I would expect with something this old.

I have no documentation other than a NextStep User's Guide and the NeXT Network and System Administration guide.  I don't have any other manuals that talk about connecting the devices together.

I am assuming that the Y cable is hooked up right after a couple of searches here.  The double cable 13w3 end is hooked up to the NeXTStation and the DB19 end goes to the sound box and the other 13w3 end goes to the monitor.  I can turn it on the NextStation with the keyboard and since the Y cable came from gtnicol, I don't suspect that at all.  It is the proper ADB Y cable (checked the model number) for kicks but it came from gtnicol so he would give me the right one.

I have changed the battery with a new one but other than seeing the fan spinning, I assume the slab works.  There is no hard drive in it and I put in 32 MB of EDO memory in.  I don't hear any beeps but I don't currently have a speaker in the sound box so I'm fairly certain I won't hear start up sounds anyway.

I hooked it up this way just to test out the monitor for now.  Is it the monitor?  Am I not starting it up right? Is the EDO memory causing tart up problems?

I could use some advise.  I also have a mono Cube that works like a champ so I'm not a complete newbie but this Color Turbo slab has me stumped and before I do more damage, I figured I'd ask here first.

Thank you.

It's a rebranded Sony Trinitron but the fact that the safety engages and won't reset until left for a while indicates either a cap has shorted out or has dried out to the point the ripple is tripping it.

This is the exact same symptom that I had with my monitor when I powered it up after many years in storage.  A bit of research revealed that many other Sony OEM workstation monitors of that vintage were developing issues with the HV protection circuit that was tripping after power-on.

I spent a considerable amount of time trying to locate a suitable schematic (including paid service manual services), but was unable to find one.  I did not contact Sony directly, mind you.  I considered my options and in the end decided that blindly replacing all of the electrolytic capacitors was too time consuming and too expensive.  Without the service manual adjustment instructions I also did not want to risk a misadjusted HV circuit generating X-rays.  So in the end I found a perfectly compatible NEC LCD monitor and am using it with a 13W3 to DB15 Sun adaptor.

Otherwise it sounds like you have everything hooked up correctly with the Y-cable.  I guess your sound box is non-ADB, but how come you do not have a speaker in it?  Most EDO memory will work just fine, however I did order some newly manufactured EDO RAM from eBay once and it was not correctly recognized.  Instead I prefer previously used brand name memory sticks.  My slabs are currently loaded with 128MB of 60ns EDO RAM and all work absolutely fine with it.

One thing you could try is a very heavy cleaning. I have seen monitors kick out the high voltage due to carbon traces of dust.

Thanks for the replies.  I actually have a compressor with nozzle that I clean out computers that I get but I don't do monitors.  A good cleaning shouldn't be a problem and I will do that.  Do I have to worry about high voltage?  I would open the power supply and clean that as well if it's not a problem.

Definitely be very cautious with high voltages.  The HV power supply capacitors will hold charge for a some time, even when they are deteriorated.  The tube itself is potentially even more lethal and can store high charge.  If you decide to dive in, make sure you keep a safe distance (2 inches) from anything that could be holding a charge and use a non conductive tool.

Generally after I use a screwdriver and piece of wire to discharge the flyback I use another piece of wire to keep the anode cap and plug grounded, just in case a capacitor tries to recharge the circuit. Never been zapped. There's so much fearmongering about CRT's and electrocution it's almost annoying.

Ha!  I recall my father building televisions to supplement our living when I was a kid.  He used to demonstrate a corona discharge by getting a metal (insulated) screw driver near the anode.  This must be one of the first things that switched me on to electronics :-).

Well, no luck after trying to blow out any dust and debris.  It actually wasn't that bad to start with.  I've ordered a 13W3 to VGA from MonoPrice.  At least I'll be able to get the Color Turbo going.

Make sure the monitor you are hooking it to can support sync on green and a 72hz refresh rate and you should be OK. I have mine hooked to an NEC multisync 1990sx LCD and it looks great.
