Title: Nextstation doesn't boot

Hello,

I have a NeXTStation Turbo Color with OpenSTep 4.2.
I downloaded the game "Columns" (a Tetris) and ran it.

It started correctly a few seconds and then: SYSTEM PANIC !

Now I can't boot my machine anymore...

It stops when checking disks: Media Error and stops on a command line where I can type ls, cd, etc... but never get to the desktop.

Can anyone help?

Guillaume.

Hi,

sounds on first sight, like the harddrive has died.
Would it be possible for you to upload a photo of the screen with error messages (and text around the errors)?

I get lots of MEDIA ERRORS with 9 retries and it says that it can't boot.
I have tried "fsck -y" and the same..

I have a bootable OpenStep CD for 68k. installed as the third SCSI device.
But even with "bsd(2,0,0), the system performs a "check disk" at startup and stops with the same errors...

(it says root on sd0, i'd like to have the root on sd2 !!)

I reply to myself (love to talk to me)...

Just use: bsd(2,0,0) -a
and answer "sd2" when asked for the root device.

I am performing a new install of the system.
Then... is there a way to "mark bad sectors" ? if some locations are not reliable?

I'd recommend to use another harddrive. Even if the bad sectors are sorted out this time, your issue sounds like chances are high, that the same crash happens again.

This is wise...
But, how can one be sure that an old SCSI-1 disk will last? Are there better models than others?
