So I own a couple NeXT external CD Rom units. I seem to remember that NeXT made an internal NeXT CD rom at the end of its run. Anyone ever see an NeXTcube with an official NeXT CD rom inside a Cube?
What mod was needed to make this happen? I already have a white faced slot load CD inside mine (I need to paint the faceplate black one day) but wonder if I removed the CD unit from one of my external units if it would fit inside the Cube and work?
I have also been contemplating getting my MO drive serviced and sticking that back in but wonder if I should just stick with a more useful CD ROM.

As far as I know there was never an official model released with a CD. Someone more knowledgeable can maybe correct that. As far as the MO drive is concerned, I personally think the internal CD (or better a DVD) is more useful. I don't really trust using the MO drive for anything other than archiving existing disks.

The 1990 presentation noted that the bottom drive bay could still fit an MO drive or a CD-Rom if the customer wanted. Sony's caddy loading drives (which NeXT's rebadged) are a perfect fit with no modifications. You could probably get away with no faceplate on your drive at all if you've reversed the fan. I know someone who installed a caddy loading Plextor burner.
The external CDROM unit will fit fine in a cube. I have done that... though I prefer a slot loaded DVD-ROM myself.

Anyone have a picture of a NeXTcube with the stock Sony/NeXT CD rom drive installed?
