Well i've done this for fun:
If you like it, and can be of some help, grab it here :
http://galgot.free.fr/transit/PReV-icons.zipIt's an OSX .icns, but i've also included the pngs.
The NeXT ones are here:

This is quite nice. But i slightly prefer a more "flat" design, similar to the existing Previous icon. I think it should be closer to the NeXT icon of the Workspace Manager. All black with gaps in place of edges.
From my point of view the shadow does not look very good in the dock. But the fixed "V" is much better and of course the higher resolution is required on modern systems. This is just my personal opinion.
No prob :) As i wrote, for people who like it...
I took model from this one :
It's an OPENSTEP icon i think.
I don't know the NExT system much anyway, and don't use Previous much also. Just happen to like NExT icons a lot.
Although not the same, that Home icon has always reminded me of Jobs's Palo Alto house.
By the way, is there a specific reason why the colours on the Previous logo are in a different order (P,R,E,V = red, purple, yellow, green) than on the NeXT logo (N,E,X,T = red, yellow, green, purple) to which it alludes?

Had forgot to remove the grey pixels in the shadow, indeed wasn't looking nice in the dock - as andreas_g pointed.
Edited now, and links above updated.
looks better now :
@ mcdermd - You would have to ask Susan Kare about that :)
On my version the walls are too dark, doesn't looks nice at small size. The trick is to have highly contrasted image for small size (like the originals), but that still looks nice at king size, i think. Work in progress.
Wow, that's a nice icon... Much better than the default icon.
I wanted to set this icon as my BootX logo:
Unfortunately, the larger version I have didn't have a transparent background, so it didn't look very nice :/

here's a big one with transparent background:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/30/NeXT_logo.svg/2000px-NeXT_logo.svg.png
It has a transparent background, but it's a different icon... The other icon has a gradients that make it look "more 3D".
In any case, I'm using the vector logo now :)
IMHO your icon would look superb in the dock if you completely eliminated the shadow...
Here you go, W/o Shadows :

And finished the Home icon :
Grab it here :
http://galgot.free.fr/transit/NeXThome-icons.zipI know, maybe it should be a pine tree...
Btw, my doodlings doesn't have much to do with emulation, so modo feel free to move this thread somewhere else.
had no idea where to start it at first...
I like the new shadow-less icons!
I'm thinking about using it for future Mac OS X builds. But one minor thing disturbs me a little bit:
The letters are not aligned exacly under each other and the spaces to the border varies. Maybe the "V" is slightly too big.

Well, i've tried to align the letters like so:
don't know if this is what you mean.
I've cut the base and top of the V a bit too...
looks like this :
here :
http://galgot.free.fr/transit/NeXT-icons-WOshad.zipAlso tried some modified P and R letters. note in the NeXT logo, the only rounded letter is the
e, so tried to make more squarish P and R.
Looks like this :

Thanks for the efforts!
Think i prefer the eliptic PR over the round one. I'll test it for some time and then i'll report back or just add it to Previous.
