Any suggestions for the best third-party CD-ROM drive for use with an 040 Cube, or will any Sun-compatible SCSI CD-ROM work good enough if I set the blocksize and ID correctly?
I used a sun CD drive for years. I will resuscitate it soon actually after a very long sleep
I hope it works!
If you are looking for an external drive, I had great luck with the Nortel NTRH9105. It is an all black unit in an external SCSI enclosure. The drive itself is an ATA DVD drive interfaced internally using an Acard ATA to SCSI adapter. It works like a charm with my slab.
You can get these on fleaBay for around $30...
Sony's caddy loading drives are a sure thing as NeXT's own CD drive was a rebranded Sony unit. Toshiba is the next best thing.
DVD-303S slot-loading DVD is a good choice... can mount a DVD even.
I've used the DVD-305S and it works well to mount CD's and DVD's.

That's a great deal for the Acard adapter! They're usually around a $100
