Title: Reset network settings - my 'gf' user no longer exists -help
Post by: armus2112 on November 05, 2014, 09:55:24 PM
Hi, I reconnected my old Openstep 4.2 PC after several years. I had to reconfigure the network using this guide

http://www.nextcomputers.org/NeXTfiles/Docs/TjLs_Cable_Modem_Guide.pdf

Now after doing this, I fixed the network. yay!

However, my 'gf' user now doesn't appear to exist anymore. That was my primary user. He is not listed in /etc/passwd. The /Users/gf directory is still there.

Any idea what happened?  How can I restore my 'gf' user?

thanks so much!

Should I just login as root and recreate the 'gf' user? I just don't want /Users/gf/ to get deleted.

Sorry it's been SO long since I fooled with Openstep. I just don't want to lose all the files under /Users/gf

Maybe I'll just backup that directory and try recreating the user

OK cool.

I logged in as root, then ran the User setup program from the dock to create a new user 'gf'. It finally asked me if I wanted to retain /Users/gf which was already there and I of course said yes, retain it. Seems to be working.

Just saw this that is good to know!
The instructions in tjl config wipe the NetInfo but leave the user info which you set back up in host config but I'm not sure if it will create duplicate services if named the same or if there would need to be a merge command , I'm guessing Brian is correct.  Best regards Rob Blessin

Usually, when 'gf' merges with 'root', it leaves all stuff it owns in the /Users/gf folder.  That's when the root folder starts to accumulate lots of new stuff it doesn't need.  Sometimes, it's more organized and you'd see a /Users/wife folder.  Note that on those times when such happens, then you won't be able to create another 'gf' user, because there will be resource conflicts with the 'wife' user.

Well played pits!

The really sad part is I read it two times trying to figure out what you were trying to say before it hit me.

It's Monday and the brain is a bit slow..

There should be a 'div -f' command to define a new gf user after a merge.
