Hi, I could use some help as I have just bought a NeXT Station Turbo Slab from ebay and I have no idea how to get it to boot up properly. When I turn it on it shows that its checking the hardware and loading from the disk, then it gives me a error message saying that my computer isn't connect to the network or the network is disabled. then sits at a prompt. I have no idea how to turn off the network settings so that I can boot it up fearther. Please give me some ideas and any help would be very apprciated. Thanks.
Get into ROM monitor mode
http://www.channelu.com/NeXT/NeXTStep/3.3/nsa/09_StartShut.htmld/index.htmlFrom there, you can change the boot command to boot from the disk instead of the network. My guess is, though, that the drive has been wiped and that's why it's set to netboot.
Thanks for the info but I did the ROM monitor and it is set to boot up from the hard disk, and it does load some files as you can here it. I pluged it into my cable modem a few mins ago to see if it would do anything. It did go a lil farther but it still sits at a weird comand. After it attempts to load on the network it then stops and says
erase ^? intr ^C kill ^U
#
I've been to a few sites but can't figure out what that means.
When the system is waiting for the (not available) network, it should give a possibility to continue without the net. You have to enter Ctrl-C to continue.
When you're at the single user prompt (#), try to press Ctrl-D to continue boot process.
whoops, sorry. What winfried said.
Thanks for the info, but while the NeXT Mach Operating System little window is open and gives me the messsage that its not connected to the network it then says
erase ^? ^intr ^C kill ^u
#
and I trided command C and command D says C or D is not found and just sitts there could the operating system not be on there? like its half way deleated?
the 1st thing id do is change the root password. run
passwd
then hit ctrl+d
to keep it booting along...
bsd -v
that will be a more verbose boot if it has issues booting (command ~ gets you to ROM)
good luck!
... and be aware that "CTRL" is NOT the command key!
Hi, I've tried everything that you have said, and it still does nothing. I still can't find anything online that helps me do anything. I have no idea if I need to reinstall the system and if so, where I can get copies of the software anymore.
A log of the boot process would be helpful, I don't know, where your problems arise. If this is possible for you to provide, post it here, so we might have a clue, whats happening.
