Hello NeXT Community: I have loads as in literally hundreds of SCSI Harddrives with various issues and I suspect a lot of them are repairable and easily usable if I find the right diagnostic and repair tools ,
Has anyone used the formater app for NeXT on Peanuts 3 under tools or downloadable from the NeXT Computers archive , it looks interesting as you can set your block size where sdform is restricted?
I'm also trying to figure out how to configure MHDD on an intel box with an adaptec controller booting off the hyrens cd but the catch is it asks for a dos driver to be installed so I need to figure out how to do that to where the hyrens boot cd sees it. It looks like a really cool app as it allows you to tune in or tune out annoying drive singing . I guess I didn't realize there was a way to fine tune that stuff via bios and it would be fun to try and see if it is possible as some drives sound like an aircraft taking off and it may be just alignment issues. I wonder if it would work with Optical Disk drives as well.
It also allows you to reformat / remap the drive bypassing all the media errors if less than 100 which comes in handy and has several methods of trying to extract data from partially doa drive including reverse spin.
I've been trying to get the blue monster ssd to work and I suspect it is the bios revision also no go so far on the blue monster II with sata . Although i'm close it failed at 81% of the install with a timeout error going from an ADtron drive using buildisk giving a timeout error. I may see if the guy is willing to flash the bios for me as Mike suggested and see if that resolves it.
Other scsi hard drive issues that pop up on a lot of drives include sense key problems so not even the adaptec tools will start the format or no valid label , if I can figure out some of these issues it may help a lot of folks in a similar boat where we have a lot of non working drives and it may not be mechanical but just software, bios or other configuration issues like figuring out how to unbrick it.

I've googled and yahooed trying to locate good info in sense key codes and error codes but it would be nice to have an easy to use reference on this ....
For starters I have loads of Seagate 4gb Baracudas some format and clone easily others appear to have different formatting so my guess is there has to be a way to access and overwrite at the bios level to synch with / match the drives that works sector configuration then once thats accomplished protools works great for cloning the drive completely . I always liked using "FWB Hard Disk Toolkit". all you need is an old Mac. an LC475 (or Performa 475) will be enough. you should be able to get one for cheap. the software can be found on the Macintosh Garden site ->

Hard disks with unusual sector sizes might come from systems like IBM's AS/400 aka i Series, which used SCSI disks with 520 byte sectors.
If you have access to a Linux system with a SCSI controller, you could give the sg_format tool a try:

Rob, those 4GB (N,W) Barracudas have so many jumper settings (SCAM support, etc.)
When I've used these, there has usually been some jumper games required.
