Title: NeXT Station booting
Post by: mpatoray on July 06, 2015, 10:55:23 AM
I just got a NeXT station from a friend along with a 17" B&W megapixel monitor.

When it boots, it just says "Loading From network" and does not go any further.

Does this man that the OS is toast and needs to be reloaded, or is there a way to make it not try to net boot?

If i do need to reload the OS, where do I get the install media?

Are there any special requirements for the CD-ROM drive and what SCSI ID should it be?

How do i boot from the CD-ROM drive?

Thanks,

Matt

Hold command and the tilde key to get to the PROM console. and see what the command bsd does. When it tries booting form network either the system has been configured for netbooting or it did not find a bootable volume.

If you need to reinstall an OS you will need the installation floppy which bootstraps the machine for the CD drive, which should be set at ID 4.

As for getting the install media, that's a bit grey area for here. ;)

Hello Matt: If the system has sat for awhile or the bios battery has been pulled or replaced, NeXT's by default default to loading from network.

To change it back to booting from scsi drive is easy.

Power up the system .... immediately after it goes from testing system to loading from network, hit  command ~  , this will take you to a
NeXT> type in p for parameters and press return, it should say boot en? type in sd and press return.... this changes the default boot from network to scsi drive
default through rest of questions , where is says verbose boot no ? change that to yes and it will show what is going on in the back ground of the boot process.

When you get back to the NeXT> power off and back up and it should now load from your hard drive provided the drive is good.

I think I just sent you a NeXT Mouse from an ebay purchase , I also have the operating system software for sale.

I'll help you get her up and running. You can always email me direct at sales@blackholeinc.com or phone 303-741-9998
