I own two external NeXT CD Rom drives. Both worked fine on my NeXTcube when I owned it. Was hoping to test them both on my Color Classic Mac but starting to think these NeXT brand drives will only work on a NeXT.
I own the Apple brand external CD Rom too and although they look the same (Apple one tan and NeXT one black), the NeXT does not seem to work on my Mac.
Anyone else own a NeXT external CD Rom and can confirm this.
I just like to test items before I sell them so a fellow NeXTer can know fairly well what he is buying will work. Would be surprised that both were working fine on my NeXTcube earlier this year all of a sudden are not working any more.
Sure these two external NeXT models will make someone happy but wanted to test first if I could.
Curious.

you are aware that with classic Mac OS you need a modded system extension? otherwise the Mac won't recognise a non-Apple CD-ROM drive.
EDIT
ha! found a how-to :D

Cool, will have to look at getting resedit and try this. ;-)
Thanks

I have an Apple CD300e and exactly the same NeXT caddy drive (but black) both work on my Turbo Slab, Turbo Cube, Mac 840av, also have an SGI Toshiba drive that works on the all as well, apart from IBM internal drives on the Cube and Slab, never had a problem, with SCSI.
The Apple & NeXT drives also work on my SGI Octane.
There used to be another extension for Mac OS classic that handled non OEM drives, I think it was Toast or one from Astarte CD Copy
This driver should be compatible with most drives:
