I was fortunate enough to be given a mono NeXTstation by itself without any peripherals. I assumed that I could use the bits from my turbo colour slab. Turns out I was wrong :)
How does one go about connecting a 3rd party display & keyboard to a mono NeXTstation?

Not easily. You can force a NeXT to run without a monitor using a resistor (https://www.netbsd.org/ports/next68k/faq.html#no-monitor) but you will need a non-ADB keyboard and mouse or similar if you want peripherals.

I keep hearing people mention that you can run a multisync monitor off a mono NeXT's monitor port but personally I've never tried it and don't remember any of the how-to's on how to build the adapter.

I have not-ADB peripherals from the turbo colour slab, have would I connect those to the mono slab with a NeXTdisplay?

Naturally yes. The mono's monitor cable carries the lines for the keyboard/mouse interface. The digital board in the monitor breaks that out into the appropriate connector with a bit of logic. On color machines the otherwise identical digital board resides in the soundbox with the appropriate lines coming form the slab's 13W3 connector.

You need a custom Y-cable and a non-adb soundbox, same as a cube.

Do you have a description of the Y-cable (pinouts, ...)?

I've never documented just the cable, but you should be able to infer everything you need to know from my sound box mod guide.

http://asterontech.com/Asterontech/next_adb_conversion.html

Basically just connect the video signal from the nextstation to the RGB signal of the monitor with a 150ohm resistor in series.
