I received a strange cube board from Rob today. There has been quite a bit of rework done on it. It's the original 1990 68040 board, but the VLSI chips have all been replaced with later versions. Additionally the 96 pin connector has been replaced with a straight connector instead of the usual angled one. This makes it so the board will not work in a cube. I'm thinking this could have been used for factory testing. I'm looking for opinions on if I should convert this back to standard operation, or if I should leave it as is?

I thought you would like to tinker with that one! :) It might have been a prototype board for a NeXTSTATION or with a cable maybe it was used at Bell Atlantic for troubleshooting Cube backplains and powersupplies ...

Well, hopefully the lack of replies means I didn't destroy something meaningful. I went ahead and restored the board to cube useable condition. That required redoing the connector, the wire patching, caps, and some general degraded trace repair. Seems to be working just fine now.
