Hi, I have an old monochrome slab and it is fully working.  Its a little slow, but the biggest pain is dealing with the old brick mouse.  Its heavy as a rock and diminishes he experience after getting familiar with the newer lightweight mice.  Is there an updated ADB solution that isn't quite so heavy?  Thanks in advance.

I've heard stories, maybe in comp.sys.next.hardware that people have hacked Logitech bus mice to work, not sure what bus means exactly, maybe PS2 or serial.  Don't think your gonna get an ADB one to work, unless of course you have one of the last slabs with a Turbo chipset & latest ADB capable ROM (v74 iirc), but you'd probably have to change monitor as well.

I like the old mouse, it has a nice feeling to it, it does weigh a bit though.

There is a load of info on the subject.

Check out the "What can use ADB hardware" thread in this forum for more info on this.  Ashman has picked up a bunch of 3button bus mice that he is going to mod so they can work on non-ADB equipment.

Yeah, the mice came in yesterday, so now it's a race to see if I can get a few switched over before work sidelines me for the next 2 weeks...

I'll keep everyone posted.

Worst-case scenario, I'll have a batch of them ready for Halloween...

They aren't exactly "pretty", but if all goes as planned, they should work.

At the very least, I'll do some experimentation with making one black this weekend...

Just curious as to what you are doing about the connectors?  Do you have a bunch of the 8pin connectors or cables that you are going to cut and splice to the existing mouse cable?

Sure hope the black works out.  Then I could attach one of the more beat-up next badges I have and make it look "official" .... mabey not, will have to wait and see.

Well, I have a couple of mini-din connector ends where you can select the number of pins you want that I was going to use to modify a pair of LCD glasses to work with my SGI Indy.  I'm going to use one of those to mock the first one up and make sure it works before I blow out somebody else's NextStation box...

However, when it comes to making the final product, I'll probably just get a bunch of these:

Well, for anyone who's interested, I got a bunch of 8-pin DIN connectors from a local electronics store, so this weekend I should be whipping up some NON-ADB Next mice for anyone who's interested.

As previously stated, they won't set you back much.  Probably somewhere in the range of $5-$7 (before shipping), but I'll add all that up this weekend...

Welcome back Ashman, I hope your trip was good.

How did the painting tests go?  Were you able to "make one black"?

Trip went well.  It was actually pretty nice over in Germany but it's cold here now that I'm back...

Anyway, I did paint one of the mice.  It looks pretty good, but I really have no idea how well the finish will hold up.  If anybody wants one painted mate black with Krylon Fusion, I can certinly do that and I'll hit it with a protective clear-cote as well.  The cable, of course will stay gray.

But I'm not going to make any guarantees about how well it's going to hold up over time...

Ok...  I managed to whip up a prototype, and then of course, having not had a mouse before, I hadn't yet gone through the process of installing NeXTStep on my box.

So, after it's all said and done, the prototype mouse seems to work perfectly.

Now, that being said, I don't have any applications that use the middle mouse button, so I can't yet test the middle mouse button on the prototype.  Currently, I have it wired to press both the left and right buttons at the same time which is how some programs supposedly emulated a middle button.

So, let me sit down and figure a couple of things up and I'll post again with a price and options list for anybody who wants one.  I bought 15 bus mice off of e-bay, but I currently only have about 5 of the Mini DIN-8 connectors, so I will have 4 mice for sale to start off with.  I believe that NextChef has already spoken up for two of them.  So, I will immediately have two others for sale and if there is interest, I'll get some more 8-pin connectors and whip up some others...

Details on pricing and options to come...

If the demand is high, I only need one to start with.  That way one more person can get one.  I wanted the second one as a spare, so I can wait until you get more connectors, for my second one.

And I would prefer mine black, if you please. :)

Ok... Here are the details...

I have a total of 12 mice that I'm willing to sell, so once they're gone, they're gone and that's all she wrote.

Right now I immediately have 4 for sale (NextChef, if you want your two, just PM me.  You have first dibs) and I'll order more connectors as needed.

Here's the pricing.  If you are interested, just PM me with a quantity and an option number from the following:

1) Black Mouse with wired middle button - $7.00
2) Gray Mouse with wired middle button - $6.00
3) Black Mouse without wired middle button - $6.00
4) Gray mosue without wired middle button - $5.00
5) Non-modified gray bus mouse - $3.00

If I don't wire the middle mouse button, then it just becomes a dead switch and isn't connected to anything.  If anybody wants to perform the modification themselves, I'll sell them a non-modifed bus mouse at the above price.  However, note that the pinouts that have been posted so far are very confusing and are valid for Logitech bus mice which are slightly different than the MS bus mice that I have.  I had to do some major detective work to get it all straightened out.

Caveat emptor on the black mice.  They will be painted with Krylon Fusion spraypaint and then given a matte clear cote.  I'm currently using one now with my MonoStation and it seems to be holding up, but who knows how it will work after 2 years or so, so I'm making no guarantee about the finish.  If you're concerned about it, then I'd encourage you to go with one of the gray mice and see if you can live with it.  You can always give it a shot of Fusion yourself if you decide to later...

I will only charge what it actually costs me for shipping and packaging.  I won't gouge anyone on the shipping.  It shouldn't be much since these things hardly weigh anything, and I will ship UPS so that everyone involved has a reliable tracking number (as opposed to the USPS where items routinely show up before they're even registered as being in the system.)

I think that's it.  Hopefully some more people will be able to get their boxes up and running with these since the non-adb hardware is getting sort of scarce these days.  Thanks to everyone here who has helped out with this initiative by helping me out with my noob questions.  I sincerely appreciate it.  My NextStation is now up and running and I certainly couldn't have done it without the support I've recieved here.
