A local ebay-resale shop has a DEC 4000 VLC model:VS48K-AA for sale.  The opening bid is $5 + $5 for local pickup.  I do not know much about DEC systems, so if someone thinks this is useful, or would like me to pick it up please let me know.  I dont have one, which is usually a good enough reason to get it, but I would rather not waste time if it is a piece of junk.

Any thoughts?

The 4000VLC is probably the smallest VAX you can find. I also have one of these here. It makes a nice little box for experimenting with VMS or Net/OpenBSD. Rather slow (even by VAX standards) and limited to 24 MB RAM and either 2 or 4 GB of disk space, but a fun little machine nevertheless.

Make sure you get the LK401 keyboard and a mouse with the VAX... oh, and you need a monitor that accepts sync on green (or a serial terminal and a MMJ-to-Sub-D-cable).

cuby..
It does have the keyboard, but no mouse or monitor.

helf ..

Ok, thats all the convincing I need :)

From a quick look at the blackcube website it does not look like James has one either.  Unless it's in the uncategorized stuff he has hidden away.

From looking at it, the monitor connector seems a bit strange.

It appears to be like a 13w3, but just the 3 coax connectors.  As I said, I know nothing about DEC's, so this may be the normal connector.  Do they make adapters to convert this to standard vga or not.

It has no mouse with it, so will that make it non functional?

I will give it a go, and see if I can win it.  If it is not to my liking, I can pass it on to someone else for the shipping and the cost I have in it.

It's a 3w3, quite common for DEC hardware. It shouldn't be too difficult to get a 3w3 to VGA or BNC converter cable or adaptor.
