Has there ever been an upgrade for the NeXT mouse like this Amiga mouse upgrade? http://amigastore.eu/en/559-laser-upgrade-for-amiga-mice.html

I like the NeXT keyboard but the mouse is lacking compared to a modern mouse.

There was never any options available for the non-ADB amchines but if you are using an ADB NeXT you are able to use any of Apple's third party products, including at least two models of optical mice.

There is  a roller trackball mouse , I have one I'm going to list on eBay just looking for the driver floppy disk works with non adb.  It is very rare, even says NeXT edition on the box! Best regards Rob Blessin

How well does it work compared to the stock mouse?

Hello Wayne: Apologies for the delay , so the roller mouse is adb only . however I know I have some serial to non adb adaptor cables , that let you hook up serial mice.  Also this mod http://www.nextcomputers.org/NeXTfiles/Docs/Hardware/replacement_non-adb__mouse.pdf

The non-ADB NeXT mouse simply outputs rectangle signals (like Atari ST and  Amiga mice and also the PC bus mouse), so adapting one of these is easy - just build a plug adapter. So, an Amiga mouse upgraded using the laser upgrade module should work.

There was an adapter to attach a Logitech bus mouse to NeXTs (I own one and it works quite well) - this guy still seems to sell the adapter and mice:

Obviously, you will not gain any additional features such as a third button or a scrollwheel using the adapter and you won't be able to find an optical bus mouse, since these have not been manufactured for decades now.

I seem to remember that there was also a driver for serial (RS-232) mice attached to one of the UART ports on the 68k NeXTs, but I can't find the information right now...

Thanks for the info, I figured it was possible but didn't know if it had been done.

A serial mouse driver also would be great as serial optical mice are still easy to find.
