Has anyone had success getting OpenSTEP to recognize a CD-ROM drive with this motherboard? All of the drivers I've tried so far haven't worked. According to the manual, it has an UltraDMA/33 Bus Master.

The EIDE driver configured as "Primary/Secondary(Dual) EIDE/ATAPI Device Controller" usually works for most all PIIX controllers.

Have you tried all the possible configurations for cabling and jumpers?  I don't trust cable select on older hardware, especially with ide cables of unknown vintage or origin.

Does the drive work (shows up in bios / other oses)?

Yes, it's recognized by the BIOS and by other operating systems. I've tried the Primary/Secondary(DUAL) EIDE/ATAPI Device Controller driver as well as a few others and the drive doesn't get recognized. I have tried a lot of different configurations with the drive and have also even tried another drive.

Does the drive show up in the kernel messages after selecting the driver(s) and it gets to the white console?
It could be the drive doesn't recognize the inserted media.

Can you take a picture of the screen when it panics?

The system is put away right now, if this information isn't enough let me know and I'll hopefully have enough time to get it back out tonight:

* It doesn't detect the CD-ROM drive, only the hard disk is detected (I can see that hd0 is the only drive)
* Sometimes there would be an hc0 drive with about ~505-514 MB capacity which showed up depending on the driver I used but I couldn't boot from it (it couldn't find the root media, specified hc0, no dice)

Hm. It could be an incompatibility with the drive's firmware, but I've used a good selection of older and newer IDE cdrom (not dvd-rom) drives with 4.2 successfully in the past.
I don't currently run 4.2 on real hardware anymore, it's easier to just use VMware these days with the vga/mouse/nic drivers available.

Yeah, I tried a couple of different drives to no avail.

Hello: The way to go would be find an Adaptec 2940 SCSI Controller , how ever your eide dual channel driver should work, heck that is a P2 ...... you might as well find a PIV  much faster and they can be had for a song.

So use the latest version of the driver found on the Y2k patch Cd.

I found a great FAQ and I'll try and make an install video at some point..

Check out this ought to help http://openstep.bfx.re/    Best Regards Rob Blessin

OPENSTEP 4.2 should work with almost all PII, PIII and P4 motherboards.  You just need the EIDE controller....
