Can I use a Sun 411 scsi cd drive on my nextstation? I just about have everything I need to try and fire one up, and will need some way to install NS on it.
I am trying to get my hands on a 600e, but if that falls through I will need an alternative.

I think it would probably work. I've been using Toshiba's on all of my NeXT's with no issues at all. One rule of thumb - if it will boot a Sgi, it will boot a NeXT. Both require the 512 byte block setting.
Chef,
The Sun 411 CD-ROM Drive will work fine on a NeXT. It's what I used when I first got my ColorStation five years ago. Also, Plextor makes a nice External CD-ROM that does the trick.

I assume the Apple 600e will work as well, as someone else here mentioned they had used one to install on a station once. I just picked one up for $15 plus shipping, just in case ;)

I wish that where true for me, I have a Toshiba XM 7201 or maybe 7401, in anycase it's a 32x Tosh in a Sun 611 Unipack case. It works fine on my Octane, boots Irix 6.5.26 mini root etc.
It won't work on either of my NeXT's, when I try to boot I just get the message waiting for drive to come ready, and the Tosh spins up, then back down the the NeXT gives an error and the cycle repeats endlessly.
I have an Apple CD 600 clone in a D2 case that works with my NeXT, I also have the 2 speed NeXT CD ROM. The one I use most of the time is a Yamaha CRW 4416SX ext SCSI CD writer which works fine.

That's very strange as I use one of those exact drives (XM7401) and it works flawlessly on my Color Turbo station.

Hmm, I wonder if I've got something wrong, maybe it's the case, I know it's not the cable as I use the same cable for using a Unipack 611 ext HD on my NeXT's.
I can't recall, is there a jumper on the Toshiba's for 512 bytes?, I'm sure it must be set up OK or it would not work with the Octane, unless the Octane sets up 512 byte blocks by using a SCSI command?

Brams, isn't the jumper only for trying to boot from CD-ROM and not for normal work? Blocksize 2048 should be OK for normal conditions

I have no idea Andreas, I'd always put it down to the fact that at 32 speed it was simply too fast for the NeXT and had given up on trying anymore.

I was able to boot my NeXTs from a TEAC 532S (32x SCSI) CD-ROM drive - in a Sun 411 case, btw. - so the speed shouldn't be a problem.
