Hi guys!
I have easy question for you. I want to make a creative documentary on my facebook channel about the creation of Doom. They used a Nextcube computer. After that, they bought a Nextstation and they finally upgraded it to turbo.
I need informations because I want to be precise in my documentary and I don't want mistakes. 3 specific easy questions for you guys.
Questions:
1-Is the Nextcube has always have been monochrome? black and white? Is there any upgraded version of nextcube that was in color?
I'm talking about the nextcube, not the nextstation.
2-Was the cube of the nextcube able to connect to other monitors like the NEC MultiSync 6FG - CRT monitor - 21" JC-2141UMA?
Or the cube was only able to connect to the nextcube and nothing else?
3-In that specific picture, there is debates in another forum. is it possible that the black box just above his shoulder and 3/4 hidden is a cube of the nextcube that would be connected to this monitor?
Seems like it is but if I look more closely, it seems like something else. There is no lines at the top of it like the original cube from the nextcube.
Thx guys for taking your time to read and answer! :-)
thx!
For #1, the NeXT Computer (later called the NeXTcube) motherboard was always grayscale, yes. The add-on board that provided color to the cube was called the NeXTdimension.
I don't know about the others, as I have never owned a color NeXT system.
Good luck in your documentary.
Hello Max: Here is the book you need
https://fabiensanglard.net/gebbdoome.pdf , Fab is one of our Forum Members , I would contact him through his website as he wrote an excellent book on Doom and its entire history! I provided him the NeXT equipment he used in the book :)

To be precise, the NeXT Cube in all variants had a 2bit grayscale display at 1120x834 resolution. A graphics card called the NeXT Dimension could be added to achieve 32bit (24bit+8bit of alpha channel) colour at the same screen resolution.
