Anyone mod their NeXT box?? I was thinking of taking the slab that I have and doing some crazy mods to it for kicks...
I have taken my G5 and added some lights, better fans, etc.. Have modded the lights on my Octane with brighter LEDs and a 555 timer to add some blinking/effects to enhance the general appeal of the box..
Someone has to of done some crazy mods to a NeXT box...
Personally, this is my favortive Mac mod...

I'm sorry. I can never get into modding. I look upon modders like I do the ricers and their "Fast and the Furious" inspired riceburners.
As far as "blinkin lights" that have no function......WTF for? Why bother?

I might consider swapping out the fan on my Octane and using a GE90 Turbo Fan off a Boeing 777 in an effort to reduce noise but that's about it. ;-)
It's just like the same with humans:
You can not change first impression, charakter, style, manners and everything else of a being when this being appears "self-contained", you can only downgrade the being.
So why modding a NeXT?
J
Well, I was just thinking about it and was wondering if anyone has done any cool mods.. I have an old performa that might go on the chopping block first.
Cheers.

Now that might get you a quieter SGI!!! Do you know if the Fuel's are as loud?
I am thinking about building a container to quiet mine down, something like a wood box with metal lining to keep it fireproof.. in a closet and run all the cords out into the room.

There is a guy on the forums at Nekochan who made an Octane silencer.

Good one brams.
Try sitting in a room with 6 of them humming away, along with a bunch of other systems all in open racks. I used to have to bring earplugs with me when I went out to that client to keep from going deaf.

You heard an Octane when they have an hardware error and put the fan on full blast?.
I love SGI engineering though, you could knock a nail in with an SGI and it would still work. Look at the CPU heatsink screws on an Octane, you could hold a car wheel on with them.
Back in the day when I beta tested the Octane for SGI, it came without a skin, living in Chicago then, it was great for heating a room up in winter. It is a great box and should of been reengineered with the Octane 2, but alas, not what they modified, just bigger graphics boards that required more cooling. Also depending on how many slots you have filled, more than three I believe, the fan runs on high, period. You have to hack the box to get it to run not on full.
Too bad that it makes soo much noise, that is actually the reason that I have leaned towards NeXT, much more quiet and UNIX to boot!!
Mines basically an Octane 2 with an mgras MXE board instead of Odyssey graphics. As and when prices come down I might go for a dual R14K 600 and V12, but by then I might be able to get a Tezro.
Love the Octanes light bar, mines got a blue LED in it, which looks a lot like Gort from The Day The World Stood Still.
Dont know if they were on full or not, but I would guess so. The server room at this place did not have proper air management, or enough cooling. It was 80-85C in there all the time, so I guess the fans were screaming trying to keep the systems cool.
