Hello NeXT Community:
I figured out why if you are running Mathematica 1.0 and it Crashes in version 3.3 simply move Mathematica.app to the NextApps directory :) ,
if it is located in apps or localapps then it bombs.
I found this out by clicking on the math kernel
on later Mathematia versions , you can install it in different directories like Apps and LocalApps.
WHY? Mathematica 1.0 was bundled with NeXTSTEP 1.0 and unbundled later.
So later versions require for registration ;
a organization name,
machine name which it assigns,
License number and then
the password which would come from
registering the product at wolfram.com/registration (no longer works).
Wolfram assigned me licenses long ago to provide hobbyist NeXT mathematica licenses for the NeXT community . We were able to register and obtain passwords from Wolfram but it no longer works and the trail has gone cold. My contacts at Wolfram have retired or passed:)
I know there is also a workaround to bypass the licensing .... if anyone has the procedure available it would be very much appreciated , as we can unlock 3.0. (please drop me an email)
Here is my statement from Wolfram , so yes it is OK to do this
http://www.blackholeinc.com/catalog/software/Software/Scientific/math.pdf I also can provide a NeXT download of Mathematica 3.0 ISO for $19.95 (keeps the lights on)
and I also have original Mathematica 2.1 Floppies for $50 if anyone is interested
please drop me an email.
at bhi1@ix.netcom.com ,
I accept paypal for payment and will send you a paypal invoice with download instructions.

Thanks, the was the final piece of the puzzle for me. My NextStation came with Mathematica 2.2, but the license was invalid -- I've tried everything to get a copy working. I had similar results when I emailed Wolfram asking for help.
Since Mathematica 1.0 was bundled with NS1.0, I figured that was fair game. Here's what I had to do to get it into my NS3.3 slab...
If anyone wants to skip all those steps, here's a direct link to my Mathematica 1 archive:
