I replaced the motherboard battery and got a dead Next Cube to boot to the Nextstep login screen. My trouble is I don't know the login info. I have managed to boot into the command line with command~ and get the NeXT> prompt, but I'm otherwise lost. Reading the forums brings up some dead links and incomplete info about resetting the username/password at the login screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm in Grand Rapids, Michigan, by the way. It's my first Next computer, which I'm working on with my 14 year old son. Go easy on us UNIX newbs.
Thanks to Black Hole for helping solve this issue. The issue with single user mode I was having was due to plugging in an Ethernet cord, which was the only thing that (at first) allowed me to get into the ROM command line. Leaving that plugged in prevented me from entering single user mode, though.
Now, diving in to try to side load some software from a Mac...
before boot, enter to monitor mode
then you can boot as single user
then you should be able to change the password of root
