Even an old Macintoshes has a very good collection of different kind of music software: MIDI sequencers, sample editors, synth control software and so on.
Is there any kind of music software for NeXT computers?
Have you checked the NeXT software archive on the main site, as it has a fairly complete assortment of all NS/OS software.

Yea there was some amazing music software on the next. Lots of it was based on music kit.

I was able to get MAX 0.19 running as part of the ISPW kit, which is available via CCRMA or somewhere else. I can't do much with it, as I don't have the Ariel hardware, and the MIDI implementation seems to be very Cube-oriented rather than slab-oriented.
I did manage to get MIDI into my slab over a standard ImageWriter II cable, from my Yamaha QY-100 running in "PC-1" mode. But it doesn't seem I can send MIDI *from* the slab to the QY-100. This matches with the online documentation which suggests that some serial cables to MIDI interfaces which are not-quite-to-spec will allow MIDI to travel in one direction but not the other. Now if only I had the soldering skills to build the proper RS-423-to-MIDI-interface cable...
I believe for these tests/experiments I was using SynthBuilder and/or Sequencer.app(?). Lots of fun bits in Music Kit.
