Title: Identifying NeXT Cubes
Post by: lclark on October 16, 2006, 11:29:13 PM
I have two NeXT cubes that I'm trying to identify.  Is there a way to determine whether these boards have the color upgrade?  Whether they're 25 or 33mhz?

The processor is 68040.  What else can I tell by inspecting the Mobo?

All hints appreciated, thank you.

Well, smarter people than me know about the turbo or non turbo, but if it has two cards in it than it is a color. The motherboard is on the right, and the dimension board is on the left if I remember correctly. It's color only if the case has two boards in it. Otherwise if it only has one board, it is a mono.

I believe that the Turbo motherboard for a NeXTcube has only 4 RAM sockets, for 72-pin SIMMs (up to 32M each), whereas the motherboards using the 68030 and 25MHz 68040 have 16 RAM sockets for 30-pin SIMMs (up to 4MB each).

Thus you'll need to pull out the board some distance in order to distinguish its type, since the IC side of it faces the wall of the central column that contains the PS and mass storage (HD,FD,CD,OD).
