Hello everyone,
For ages I've been trying to get Mathematica 2.2 again like I had on my old Turbostation.
Wolfram absolutely refuse to issue license numbers for anyone. and my understanding was that they changed the serial generation seed with each version.
However in a fit of thickheaded stupidity I decided to try the oldest key generator I had - for V4.0.
Well, it works on both V2.2 and V3.0
NB: Mathematica 3.0 is available on NeXT and Intel (I think also sparand HP I can't remember. Will anyone try that?) V2.2 is NeXT only. So you have choices where you run it.
Below is proof. (it was of an earlier attempt so has an error message, but yours won't.)
I'm not sure of the etiquette of uploading key generators to this forum so I'll leave off the original file for now. I will leave instructions.
Use the mathematica 4.0-4.1 keygen V1.2 by hard-wisdom.
Select European style license and enter your mathid and license number. If you don't have a license number there should be an example mathpass file with a license number you can use.
I selected license style 1.
Hit generate.
Use the password it generates and alter your license string as it displays below the password
(EG: Change L2093-8764 to L0000-8764).
That's it!
Hello NeXT Community: This is excellent news , I was able to get pemission to do this from Theodore Gray back in the 90's, nice fellow
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Gray , he cofounded Wolfram and won a Nobel Prize for chemistry in 2002
Letter from Wolfram hobbiest Mathematica licenses....
http://www.blackholeinc.com/catalog/software/Software/Scientific/math.pdfThank you Spitfire !
Best regards Rob Bllessin
Since Rob has permission, and spitfire has a keygen, can the necessary bits be shared with the community for download somewhere?
If Rob says it's okay I'll post the key generator here.
So Rob, is it okay to do this?
Congrats and way to go!
Well I haven't heard a "NO" from Rob. So here it is.
Beware, I haven't virus scanned this. So run it in a VM without network. I ran it on a Windows 2000 VM.
Virustotal gets a hit on one of the 59 engines it uses to scan files, but not sure how accurate that engine is.
https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/9224acd578450507885bc91862c33297fa9fc4cf60efe28571dc362cd0c4c03f/detection
Thanks spitfire. I actually have a legit copy, with the original license and install media, that I got from a University, but the the hostname changed and there's a printed e-mail trail of Wolfram trying to fix it for them. Ultimately, it partially works but throws a warning every time you run a calculation. Hopefully this solves it (20 years or so later!)

I think it's reasonable because there are people here that have legit actual licenses and cannot use the software they paid for otherwise.
Hello NeXT Community : Absolutely Yes on the keygen, I don't know how I missed this as we have permission for Mathemmatica hobbiest license use for NeXT 68K hardware all version up until 3.0.2. It is an App from the roots of NeXT and Wolfram ; Mathematica 1.0 originally came bundled with NeXTSTEP 1.0 on the very earliest cubes :)

Considering how special these licenses are I don't think we would have any problem with registering one internationally. If the registration system gives him any trouble let me know.
We are, like everyone, thinking about what to do with the iPhone.

And from Stephen Wolfram below..... I encourage all of you to continue purchasing Wolfram Research new offerings of all products on all platforms !
I'm excited to be able to tell you about a major new release
today across our whole suite of products.
I began the development of our products nearly 30 years ago. When
we released Mathematica in 1988 it transformed technical
computing--but for us it just provided the base for three decades
of amazing innovation. At the very beginning I defined principles
which have continued to guide our development, and have led us to
create a technology stack of unprecedented proportions, broadly
spanning computation and knowledge.
Encompassing the breakthroughs of both Mathematica and
Wolfram|Alpha, we've recently released the Wolfram Language,
which defines a new approach to programming and computation.
Today we're releasing a major upgrade to the Wolfram
Language--further strengthening its core capabilities, and adding
a host of major new areas.
Unlike other languages, the Wolfram Language is built to automate
as much as possible, and to build in as much data about the world
as possible. It elegantly combines many modern programming
paradigms, as well as integrating the latest AI techniques,
including many breakthroughs made at Wolfram Research.
Our products are available both for desktop and cloud (including
private clouds). You can go to our Wolfram Open Cloud to check
out the latest capabilities.
If you're interested in software development or research and
development, go to:
http://www.wolfram.com/development-platformIf you're interested in learning modern programming and
computational thinking, go to:
http://www.wolfram.com/eiwlAnd for our whole story, see:
http://www.wolfram.comI also posted a blog today about the latest release:
http://blog.wolfram.com/2016/08/08/today-we-launch-version-11The Wolfram Language is perhaps the largest and broadest
integrated technology system ever built--and it's used in top
organizations all over the world across every industry. In the
past it's been strongest in R&D; today it's rapidly expanding
into the deployment of large production systems.
I've personally been deeply involved in the design and
architecture of our system throughout its evolution--and today I
couldn't be more excited about the rate of innovation we've
achieved, and the way in which we've been able to use our own
technology to make this happen.
Particularly with the new release today, there are amazing
opportunities opening up with the Wolfram Language. I hope you'll
be able to take advantage of them. We'd be pleased to answer your
questions--and we're also always happy to get your suggestions
about how we can make our technology stack even more useful in
your particular area.

Rob. Do you (Or anyone else) have a copy of 3.0.2? I've only been able to find 3.0.1, and of course 1.0/2.0/2.2.
I'm currently using 3.0.1 on a regular basis.
Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but can someone here explain to me how to find the correct MathID? I have 2.1 running fine under Previous 2.5 but can't get 3.0 to license correctly using the app from upthread.
I also can't get a copy of the 3.0.2 iso to unstuff correctly on Windows but that's a different game :)
Thank you for your help.
I have 3.0 licensed using spitfires guide. I seem to recall some lack of clarity around this as well, but I don't recall or I didn't make notes about it. If you want to to share what you see (PM?), I can compare it to the screensave I made at the time. Perhaps that will be revealing.
Is there a copy 3.0.1 posted somewhere?
Jerry
Macintosh Repository has the 3.0.1 iso but it's a sit file that I'm fighting with. I'm hoping basilisk ii can deal with it.
Sometimes for a quick unstuffing or whatever, I've had success using
https://system7.app or
https://macos8.app. Saves having to install an emulator locally. See sticky notes on the desktop for info on how to get files in and out.
Hello NeXT Community: I found my original 3.0.2 Mathematica while looking for something else today , I think we had paid $1500 back in the Day . So officially February 9th , 2023 is 30 years in the NeXT Business for me. Here is the CDR I made for you all of Mathematica 3.0.2 and a link
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nMaRVa2iEXOah_hdN1gZIAqhXohX11hS/view?usp=share_link , It has all the different platforms look under Unix for the NeXT Versions :) Thanks for keeping the lights on here at blackholeinc.com and computerpowwow on eBay. You can always buy me a coffee paypal to glenblessin@yahoo.com Enjoy! Best regards Rob Blessin This was the official last version for NeXTSTEP :) let me know if it works or if you need help as always.
Thank you for this! I greatly appreciate it.
I added it to the SCSI disk list in Previous 2.5 on Windows 10 and 2.7 on Linux Mint 21.1
It mounted the disk, and I started browsing the disk but, in both cases, something quickly caused workplace manager to crash me out to the login screen.
If this is due to simply being a cdr rather than a physical cd, I'll have to wait to buy media a week from Friday (payday :) )
I do note that I have not had any issues with iso files in Previous.
Plus I'll still need to figure out the mathid question but that's a different crazy ;)

Try this link
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nMaRVa2iEXOah_hdN1gZIAqhXohX11hS/view?usp=share_link I went back and reformatted , this iso is made from a customer pdf file converted using anytoiso.app and I tried it and it seems to work in Previous , where the other cdr version I mad earlier had workspace manager crash issues :)
There might be an issue with Previous, I tried several images and sometimes I was able to install just fine and other times I'd get either workspace crashing or other weirdness.

I can see my MathID on the registration window of Mathematica, but where do I get the license number? I couldn't find the mathpass file anywhere either.
At least in Mathematica 2.2 there's an example mathpass in Mathematica.app/Install/mathpass
for a machine called "Kernighan" L2093-8764. Try that as your license.
You can use the GUI mathematica license installer or the script in Mathematica.app/Install/ to install a license.
Ok, follow up.
The 3.0.2 iso has all of the file names squashed to lowercase. All of the exectuable bits have been stripped off as well. I've tried making a tarball to put the files on my data drive but it still fails to run the installer because of those issues.
The 3.0.0 iso I have ran fine from the command line. That also gave me the mathid needed to successfully license the install using the app from this thread. Once installed, however, I am unable to find a Mathematica.app for version 3 anywhere on the disk. The one in NextApps started up my copy of 2.0 I copied the Mathematica executable from the CD and after a bit of puttering it runs from the command line and the couple of expressions I tried evaluated correctly.
I tried reinstalling 3.0.0 after renaming the NextApps Mathematica.app M2.app to see if it created a Mathematica.app then. It found the license info so that was left alone. No app but it runs fine from the executable in /usr/local/mathematica or the one I copied to /usr/local/bin though I am having path issues (&*%&# csh).
EDIT: Path issues due to still being su'd to root for the install. Fine after exiting to the Me user. Do'oh. Too used to bash. Need to adjust my account.
Hope this info is of interest/help to someone else.
On Mathematica 3.0 if you cd into /usr/local/matheamtica execute "open ." then drag the mathematica icon onto your dock, that will work nicely.
Yay! Thanks for the tip 8)
Hi All,
I recently scored a nice boxed version of Mathematica 3.0, complete of everything.
Package is officially for the Macintosh, but the box reads that installers for other platforms (including NeXTSTEP) are available on the CD. Which is true, but none of the installers seem to work, with the shell script stopping and raising an issue about some non existing path.
Any hint? Am I missing something?
(Back at the time when I was an engineering student, I used to like Mathematica, but all my true, eternal love :-) goes to Matlab, unfortunately never ported to NeXTSTEP).

There is a Matlab amiga port with the fortran source code at
http://aminet.net/misc/math/Matlab.lhaI studied Mechanical engineering and did a computer paper a couple of years ago and had to learn basic Matlab. Just used the DOS version on winworldpc and DOSBox, didn't see the point of downloading the 1GB version if all I was doing was basic MatLab stuff and the DOS version which was less than 1MB was good for the job.
I loaded the source back into the current one at school so I could smash that output to pdf function so I could hand in my assignments.

Hi
@paolo.bertolo , maybe the exact error message / path can help identify what is missing.
What is the NeXT hardware (black, white, ...) you are trying the install for, what is the OS?

Yes, I agree it could help.
So, here we go...
I get the same error (see screen grab) on a NeXT Computer 030 with NeXTSTEP 3.3 and on an HP 712, also with NS 3.3 on it.
I think it's not some kind of "bug", it would be gross, maybe I'm just missing the point about the "installers", as I strongly doubt alle these different versions would fit in just one CD ROM.
Unfortunately, I could not find any hint in the printed documentation.
Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

I will give a look at that, thanks.
In fact, I already have a v1.0 copy compiled and running on the NeXT. I believe it's totally unofficial, as there's no record (at least not that I could find any) of official releases for the NeXT platform.
For many years, even Macintosh versions were no longer released, as the business case was not there.
Anyhow, Matlab is a wonderful programming environment for scientists and engineers, I am professionally developing software based on Matlab since almost 20 years now.
Mathematica is a beauty, but covers a very different user base.

So, the CD of the "Macintosh" version contains the installer scripts of all unix versions.
However, for some reason, the actual files for the all NeXT platforms are not present on the disk.
(As a matter of fact, the box and the CD rom are reading that installers are available for many other platforms, but they are not explicitly listing "NeXT". Still, the installation scripts are present on the CD).
The image of 3.0.2 version linked by Rob is defective, if I try to mount it I get an error and if I force burn it to a CD, the operation fails, too.
Does anyone have a good image of the installer of the Unix versions?

There are two links in this thread, I've tried both. Download goes fine, but the image is garbled somewhere and I can't mount it. If I burn it, during verification phase I get an error.

You need to get Mathematica_3.0.0.iso_.zip from
https://www.macintoshrepository.org/681-mathematica-3You want the one that says it is 166.59 MB, I tried some of the other dumps on that page and they were missing the NeXT files (probably imaged incorrectly). This one worked for me with the keygen for windows in this thread. You need to find the app after installation, as detailed in the thread, also start the installer from the command line, do not simply double click the script file. I tested this in OPENSTEP 4.2 for Intel. Not sure if it will work for NeXT hardware but there you go.

By default, it seems as though Mac OS is not able to mount or burn the image, but using some third party tool I managed to.

I have a copy of Mathematica 3.0.2 but I'm not sure how I'd share it with someone in 2023....
Perhaps we need a semi-private NeXT fileserver/FTP site.
I'd be interested in a download, too.

How about uploading it to the most universal archival site currently existing, which is archive.org?
See archive.org/create (
https://archive.org/create/) and just follow the steps once being registered as uploader.
There already is a wealth of NeXTSTEP related content over there and your upload would be in excellent company.

Archive.org is a better choice.
I can do that, or upload it to archive.org.
I've got the 3.0.2 ISO here on my computer.
Alright, who should I contact to get an upload to nextfiles?
I assume there's no FTP incoming directory like the old days.
Finally got around to it. I've uploaded V2.2, V3.0, and V3.0.4 ISOs.
Here's the link. LMK if it works for y'all.

It wouldn't download. Said problems with items content.
If you expand the "ISO Image" item on the right hand side you can click each file and download them.
I just did this and the files came out find.
Neat thing is both the V2.2 and v3.0.2 have all four Next architectures supported.

I have the complete box of v3.0 for the Mac, which also includes the installers for some other platforms, but not for the NeXT (on the CDs, there's the installer script for the NeXT, too, but not the actual software).
