Only now accidentally found `/usr/prman` in the 3.3 distribution.
Unearthed an elementary example scene description, and lo and behold it works:
a snapshot on violet* hardware.
upper left: a RIB file
upper right: the RIB in Preview (it knows how to render a wireframe!)
lower left: looking at the RIB scene from behind-ish in 3View
lower right: the image rendered from the RIB
And there appears to be a rendering server app in the Demos. Although I would be more interested in using a NeXT machine as a frontend to a renderfarm running BMRT or some other RenderMan-compliant renderer.
The epic 88-page thread about Previous, among other things, says that the NextDimension had PRMan (or it may be better to say 3DKit?) acceleration? Seeing that work on both black and violet hardware would be interesting.

Found a RIB file that has the venerable Utah teapot in it.
This dithering works quite well... we have only 4 intensities and we can still make out the shapes. I guess I should turn colors on, but I like the monochrome system UI so much... want something that keeps the whole desktop monochrome except for client rects that need color!
