I picked it up in a load of other stuff I got, because I liked the rack mount case.  It contains 4 ultra sparc 360 processors, 2gigs of ram, and a 2 gig hard disk in a removable sled.  It appears to be a "headless" system, as it has no video ports at all on the back.  Anyone have any experience with these machines?  It has pci slots, one of which is filled with a nic, so can I just add a video card to another slot?  I would like to at least get to the boot screen, so I can find out more info about it.  A search on Google does not find much, and what I can find seems to be dead links for the most part.

I really only got it for the case, but I hate to just gut it and part it out without knowing a little more about it, and what It might be useful for in its present form.

Hmm... Umax450? This sounds more like a Sun Ultra 450, I think. http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/hardware/docs/Workstation_Products/Workstations/UltraSPARC_Workstations/Sun_Ultra_450/index.html has lots of Sun manuals for that machine.

If it really is an Ultra 450, you will have to connect a serial terminal to the first tty port. You could also connect a Sun (type 4/5/6) keyboard and mouse and put a graphics card in one of the PCI slots. The graphics card, however, has to be supported by OpenFirmware, so you either need a Sun-supplied card or (I never tried this) a graphics adapter with OpenFirmware ROM. I'm not sure if PCI graphics cards for PCI PPC Macs will work.

The configuration is similar to an Ultra 450, but it is not a sun built product.  From what little I could find on the web, it is similar to the mac clone machines.  It uses mostly sun parts, at least from looking at the parts numbers on the boards, but in a custom case.  It has a 501-4324 Ultra AXmp motherboard, which is a different layout than in the Ultra 450.  Found some info for that on sunshack.org, and will have to poke around a little more.

Thanks for the info, and the link.

Try attaching a null modem cable to the console port.  That appears to be the "monitor and keyboard" interface of the thing if it's anything like the Sun.  You could probably see the boot messages there.
