Title: Turbo Mono + ADB
Post by: gtnicol on January 20, 2022, 12:24:15 PM
I have a few Turbo Mono slabs with the v74 ROMs in them. They boot and work fine with the VGA adapter cables I had made... but only for non-ADB. When I connect the cable to an ADB sound card and ADB keyboard/mouse, the devices aren't seen. Has anyone experimented with this kind of setup? I'm wondering if there is some difference in the DB19 wiring for ADB... I don't remember there being any though.

I remembered an old posting that I found again via Google:

"For the mono slabs, there are monitor cables that support only non-ADB (1352.XX), and cables that support both ADB and non-ADB (4535.XX)"

So there seems to be a difference.

Pin 7 is needed for ADB and is not present on gen1 cables. Full pinout here:

You could steal a ground pin to rewire if you want.

Barcher,
Out of curiosity could you run the driver performance benchmark on your system once you get it running with SCSI2SD V6?

The tool can be found in the files archive: http://www.nextcomputers.org/NeXTfiles/Software/NEXTSTEP/Apps/Benchmarks/

My results on a TurboStation w/128meg ram and a SCSI2SD V5.2:

Write 1.4  1028
Read  2.6  2534
Index 1.97

A related question - I have a color ADB slab, but only a mono ADB monitor. Can I use that without any issue? I haven't tried it yet; I would assume it would be OK, but figured it was good to ask!

That won't work without modification. The monitor will expect power and a different refresh. Additionally the connector is different.

I have not yet found my v6 after my move. I can post if it turns up.

Should the 1352.XX be 1532.XX?

Ahhh. Thanks for that. I didn't remember there being a difference, but I guess there is! When I had my Y cables made up I must have missed it (it was like 7 years ago now).

I just checked a 1532.02 cable and it seems pin 7 is connected.

QuoteShould the 1352.XX be 1532.XX?
