I know that there is a lot of topics on this subject, however my problem isn't solved with most peoples solutions that I read. I need a solution for resetting to the root password, when it used to boot off of the network, I believe.
I have tried:
http://www.bangmoney.org/nextstep/root_password.htmlReboot the system.
Immdeiately after the "Testing System" message is replaced with "Loading from disk", hold down the right command key and press the tilde (~) on the numeric keypad. You are now at the ROM monitor.
Boot the machine into single user mode. Most people boot off the hard disk, and should type the following at the ROM monitor prompt:
NeXT> bsd -s
Once the system has started and dumps you at a root prompt, you need to make sure NetInfo and other services get started. Do this by typing:
# sh /etc/rc &
Set the root password using:
# passwd root
Now, reboot the system and you can use the new password.
Everytime I have tried this, I still can't login.
then I found a post in another forum saying to type these in:
Enter/change boot parameters:
NeXT>p
boot command sd ?<ENTER> (Options SD:SCSI Device FD:Floppy Drive EN:Ethernet_
Dram tests: yes ? <ENTER>
Perform power on system test: yes? <NEXT>
sound out test: yes? <NEXT>
SCSI tests: no? <NEXT>
loop until keypress: no? <NEXT>
verbose test mode: no? <ENTER> or y<ENTER>
Serial port A... no? <ENTER>
allow any ROM... no? <ENTER>
allow boot from ... no? <ENTER>
allow optical... yes? <ENTER>
enable parity... no? <ENTER>
NeXT>_
Then boot off the drive:
NeXT> bsd(0,0,0) sdmach rootdev=/dev/sd0a (or sd1a)
-------
Now I can't even get to a command prompt anymore and I still can't login using
username: root
and the password that I had changed it to..
If anyone could help, please reply. Or if no one can help, then could anyone point me in the right direction to someone who maybe could help?
I'll give it a shot ;- )
First of all - make sure that in the "Enter/change boot parameters" you say NO to boot extended diagnostics.
Second - you must change all the parameters to the way it should be:
NeXT>p
boot command: sd [if it's not sd - change it to sd] [hit the enter key]
AFTER THIS - if you need to change a parameter - you will type either an "n" [for NO] or a "y" [for YES] before you hit the enter key.
Dram tests: yes ? [hit the return key]
Perform power on system test: yes? [hit the enter key]
sound out test: yes? [hit the enter key]
SCSI tests: no? [hit the enter key]
boot extended diagnostics NO! NO! NO! [hit the enter key]
loop until keypress: no? [hit the enter key]
verbose test mode: no? TYPE Y and then [hit the enter key]
Serial port A... no? [hit the enter key]
allow any ROM... no? TYPE Y and then [hit the enter key]
allow boot from ... no? TYPE Y and then [hit the enter key]
and then [hit the enter key] allow optical... yes? <ENTER>
enable parity... no? TYPE Y and then [hit the return key]
NeXT>_ PRESS THE POWER BUTTON - THEN TYPE Y and then [hit the return key] TO turn OFF the machine.
Wait a minute - and then press the power button to start it up again.
If your password change is still not in effect - you will need to remove the battery on the motherboard for a few hours. This will clear the deeper level "hardware password" that may be affecting your ability to make the password change. After you remove the battery - you will have to change the parameter settings again, because they will return to defaults.
Sorry for grammar errors - or if I left something out.
Thanks for the reply. I have tried your first steps just past... "Wait a minute - and then press the power button to start it up again. "
Though, I've noticed since I've gotten this computer it has some trouble (also) posting to screen. A lot of the time it doesn't want to post to the screen, but sometimes it will when its working.
I will try your battery idea also, thanks.
Alright, I have opened the back of the case. There appears to be two motherboards that I see attached to something. I can tell apart a few of the devices inside (cpu, memory, etc.), however even if I knew what part is the battery I wouldn't be able to reach it. I know what batteries look like on (most) motherboards these days...
okay, finally I have gotten the screen to post after the steps that you gave me it says a lot of stuff ie. network information, netmask, ip, etc. and that its not connected/disabled/down then:
panic: (cpu 0) od: empty q
NeXT ROM Emulator 2.2 v63
panic: next mach 3.2 Tue Sep 14 19:25:36 PDT 1993 root(rcbuilder):mk-149.30.12.obj-2/RC_m68k/RELEASE_m68k
panic>
I can see that you have a lot of "issues" here, and that [for me] trying to explain this to a novice by typing on a messageboard is going to be difficult and time consuming.
"There appears to be two motherboards that I see attached to something"
Two motherboards? If you are looking at the back of the Cube - there should be one motherboard in the first slot to the immediate right of the power supply/drive cage.
Where is the other motherboard? Is it in the first slot to the immediate left of the motherboard?
Do these look the same? Are the ports on one on the left different from the one on the right? Does the one on the left have a 13W3 connector and some gold colored RCA connectors? If you do that - that is a color video board called a "Dimension". If you have two motherboards [CPU's] you should first try to start the machine with only one in there. It should be situated in the first slot to the right of the power supply/drive cage.
If you need to pull out the board
to pull the battery [or whatever] ... see the instructions that I posted in this thread:
http://www.nextcomputers.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=418
I see that you live in San Jose. I live in San Francisco, You could bring your Cube [only] over here - and I have everything else that we would possibly need to diagnose this - and get it running. I also wouldn't mind if we talked on the phone - please PM me with your phone # - if you want to do this.
To answer your questions about the configuration of the cube, a picture is always more useful.

I will read that thread soon, and pm you too, thx.
I'll give you $100.00 for that box - no questions asked
Seriously ... you have a "special" machine there with the Dimension video board.
The "panic" that you saw reported that the machine is trying to boot off the optical drive. Of course it can't! There is no disk in the drive, and even if there was - it most likely wouldn't work because those optical drives are garbage!
You need to set the parameter to boot from the hard drive: sd
Eventually - you might need to re-install the operating system, or it's a possibly you will need a new hard drive. As far as your comments about the video not didplaying sometimes - that could possibly be because the system preferences were set [when the machine was functioning] for the color monitor to display the boot up process.
I wouldn't do anything careless or "foolish" - like trying to mess around with the boards - unless you know exactly what you are doing! Like I said - you have a special machine!
okay, I read through your directions on the battery removal. I am not sure if I have high profile ram, however the motherboard will not budge (whatever one is the motherboard, both won't). I read through step 3 and took out the two allen screws on the frame to the cube, however the powersupply will not seem to budge either. I will pm you.
I am not selling this, actually, but I will pm you the rest of the details.
Yes - do so [PM me].
You may NOT need to remove the boards either!
Also ... re-read my last post - I edited it.
