About 15 minutes after I fixed my networking woes, I find myself in a new pickle:
On a whim I fired up the "Daydream" app that came with the SCSI2SD config I bought from
@Rob Blessin Black Hole a while back. It's been on my mind to check out the first 'official' Mac clone. I fired up the app, let it restart the NeXT, and sure enough, it booted right into Mac OS 7.1 - cool!
However... now I'm
trapped in Mac OS 7.1! Every attempt to get the machine back into NeXTSTEP just makes it reboot into Mac OS. I found the old PDF manual for Daydream and it says I should hold the "Alternate" key on the keyboard down while selecting "Shut Down" from the Special menu, but that only makes the machine reboot into Mac-mode again. In fact, as best I can tell, the keyboard (a NeXT keyboard connected to the NeXT TurboColor via one of
@barcher174's "nu_io" replacement soundboxes) isn't being recognized at all under Mac OS - I can use the mouse to get a file or folder into "rename" mode, but pressing keys on the keyboard doesn't change anything.
How do I get my NeXT to be a NeXT again?!
UPDATE: I was able to solve this problem by simply yanking the power cord on the machine, counting to 10, plugging it back in, and booting up as normal right back into NeXTSTEP. I'm going to leave this post up for the next person who runs into this!

Hello Huxley: I found it
http://www.nextcomputers.org/NeXTfiles/Docs/Hardware/Daydream/DAYDREAM%20Manual_OCR.pdf page 14 alternate command and * does it and it clean reboots to NeXT for future reference :)

Hi Rob!
Yep, I saw that and tried it, but from what I can tell, no keyboard commands at all were being passed through to Mac OS, so the various startup key-combos in the manual weren't working. Thankfully the old "yank the power cord" technique still works! ;D
Were you using ADB or nonADB? The turbo machines seem to be less reliable with the daydream in my experience. For instance I was never able to get networking to work on mine.

Hi Brian - great question! I just checked, and I'm using an ADB trackball with a non-ADB keyboard. Now that I'm thinking about it, it seems at least somewhat logical that the Daydream / Mac OS side would only recognize the ADB device (the trackball) while ignoring the non-ADB device (the keyboard).
I've got a couple Apple ADB keyboards around - maybe I'll try going into the Mac side again later with one of those connected through your nu_io box and see if the keyboard suddenly starts being recognized by Mac OS.
:)

That would make sense. The daydream probably doesn't expect both drivers to be active at once since there was never official hardware which was capable.
Hello Huxley: Are you using a NeXT Turbo or Turbo Color Station out of curiosity? If you're using a standard NeXT 25Mhz workstation mono or color and Brian's sound card , then that is interesting if the ADB roller mouse works on the NeXT side with a 25Mhz system through the sound card ;;;; because ADB isn't supported on earlier NeXT's . I guess I'll try it lol usaully you plug the matching non adb mouse into the non adb keyboard with matching non adb monitor cable and non adb sound card and ditto for ADB . As Brian's sound card has dual adb and non adb connectors , it would be amazing if a non adb keyboard and adb mouse worked in NeXTstep ? My head hurts lol I don't know if it affects Brian's sound card overloading anything to do that hmmmmm. Brian?
He has a turbo slab so this config is supported. I see no problem using it in this way other than apparently the daydream doesn't like it. If you have a turbo system the adb trackballs are a good addition.

This is really cool , I did not know that using your awesome sound card on NeXT Turbo's it is possible to mix a NeXT Non ADB keyboard with a NeXT compatible ADB Trackball Mouse using the dual ports on your sound card . My NeXT question would this also work on the modded original NeXT Sound boxes ? I'll try it :) One way to find out , see if it works.
