or was it user choice. i originally though adb machines were just newer models and it was considered and advancement. but as im looking at different machines, i don't see that pattern. and i also get the impression that some machines have ports for both types.

are there certain models that were adb only?

No.  And you aren't going to be able to determine by looking at the system unit itself.  The ADB capability is determined by chipset and ROM version (>.71) but the actual ADB ports are located on the monitor or soundbox. There you will find the ADB symbol exactly as it appears on a Mac.

If a system is ADB capable, it can use non-ADB parts as well just by matching a non-ADB monitor, soundbox, keyboard and mouse.  But if a system is non-ADB only, it won't work with ADB parts.  ADB is not backwards compatible.  Also be aware that the interconnecting cables differ on ADB machines but ADB type cables will work on non-ADB machines.  Confused yet?   :D

yes. i am genuinely confused! can it be said that one bus is "better" or more desirable than another? i really liked the next adb mouse and keyboard i used to have and i've read some complaints here about the weight of the non adb. i guess what i was hoping to find was a turbo color slab with adb capability. do you think it's really worth worrying about?

btw, i just checked out your site for the first time. probably one of the first i should have gone to!! but in all of the next related seraches ive run through google, and there have been many, i don't think it ever came up.  i had no idea such a resource even existed! amazing. i couldn't help wondering what your house or business must look like though.  :lol:

I think it boils down to the personal preference of the user, non ADB mice do feel heavy, but the ADB mouse is like a weird shape, a cross between Micky Mouse's head and that of Darth Vaders.  The ADB keyboard to me feels like somthing that Burger King give away with kid's meals.  I much prefer the non ADB keyboard, though even that it not as good as an Apple Extended KB II.

I have a few sets of non ADB KB's & mice but I only have 1 SoundBox.

ADB seems to be easier to get hold of.

I have an ADB capable v74 rom if you need one, it is a genuine NeXT spare part and has a unique MAC address.

It does boil down to personal preference.  I started out with a color turbo that had the ADB mouse and keyboard.  I prefer the feel of the rectangular non-ADB mouse - I'm neutral on the keyboard issue as I like both of them.

I really haven't a clue as to the actual number of mice, keyboards and sound boxes I have but after moving the contents of my warehouse this weekend, I'll have a better idea.  I do know that I have a spare ADB keyboard and mouse but only have one machine set up with cables and sound box for ADB - at least that's how I remember it.  A lot of my NeXT stuff has been packed since January 2004, so my memory is kind of fuzzy on exact quantities.

Let me know if you are interested in selling the "spare" ADB keyboard, as I am looking for one.  Just ordered an ADB mouse from blackcube, so am ok on that part.

Title: ADB vs. Non
Post by: itomato on October 24, 2006, 06:50:22 PM
Non-ADB Hardware:
* More solid (heavier) feel - tactile key response similar to the IBM Model M "clicky" keyboard - but without the "clickiness" - equivalent in quality to original (heavy) Apple Extended Keyboard
* No 'Command' bar under space bar on keyboard
* No real option to use trackball, external power button, ADB tablets, etc.
* Non-removable (non-replaceable) keyboard cable

ADB Hardware:
* Hardware quality similar to Apple Performa-grade keyboard
* Command-bar
* Replaceable (extendable via long S-video cable) keyboard cable
* Apple, Logitech, Kensington ADB mouse compatible
* You can use your cool NeXT adb peripherals on another machine via a Griffin iMate
* The mouse is the grandpappy of the "hockeypuck".  Slightly less awkward to use, but no less cramp-inducing.
* Newer ROM version, backward-compatibility

this is all really good info. thanks. i came across a picture in a vga adapter thread that showed a system w/all of the cable connections. things are much more clear now. until then, i didnt know how the sound box fit into the mix.

For possible future readers, weps meant the following thread (I was looking for it myself, as well):
