I am trying to install OpenStep 4.2 in the VirtualBox 7.0 Beta for Apple Silicon. Install process hangs during first mach kernel boot.
Just curious if anyone has gotten it working with this setup?
EDIT: I booted up an older Intel Macbook and installed OpenStep in VirtualBox 6.1 without issue. I suspect the issue I am having is a result of 7.0 or more likely the Apple Silicon beta.
Cool if you can get her to boot !
Which Openstep 4.2 driver are you using ? Is the CDrom Set higher than the hard drive looks like is hanging on recognizing 4.2 ISO install image.
Will it recognize and boot from a installed VB HD 6.1 image ? Will it install any other os?
Is it an M1?

Followed instructions here:

The Primary\Secondary(Dual) EDIE\ATAPI driver (7,7,5).

Ah - yes in this screenshot, that's the case. But, this was several permutations into "huh why won't this work?"

It recognizes and starts booting the 6.1 install but fails here:
I haven't tried to install another OS yet. I'll try tomorrow :)

Yes.
I just disabled the CD drive on the 6.1 install running in 7.0-beta. Now it crashes registering Display0.
I'll see if I can turn on some VirtualBox logging and get more info tomorrow.
I may go back to 6.1 and create an install that doesn't use the VESA driver, import that into 7.0-beta and see what happens. I don't think it will make much difference.
EDIT: Based on the information in this article, I don't think it is going to be possible.
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/10/virtualbox-7-0-adds-first-arm-mac-client-full-encryption-windows-11-tpm/ . The article states that it is still not possible to run Intel based guests in the Apple Silicon native version of VirtualBox. That makes sense, but I hadn't considered it since it did seem like the OS was operating at least partially.
Hello: You can always try default VGA driver to see if it will do 2 bit gray scale. That is weird it is looking for a debugger connection , is that part of the Beta Test tools ? If you press c does it continue to boot ? What about control d ? I'm rooting for you :)
