I want your opinion. Which one is the winner?
More modern and sophisticated Apple Cube G4 or more earlier and older Next Cube?

Both of Cubes have the same father  :D

What I would like to see would be NeXT cube styling in a MacCube size.  The black macmini/maccube mod that was posted elsewhere is an awesome look, but I prefer the black metal look of the NeXT to plexiglass.  Some of the "small G5 mac" fabrications seen on the macmod sites look awesome as well.

Does anyone have detailed schematics of the NeXT cube that could be scaled down to MacCube size?  It would be interesting to create a rendering at the smaller size, and display it side by side with a MacCube using photoshop magic, to get a feel of how it would look.

I really can't vote for either in this poll.  As an owner of both, I like each equally for their own strengths.  Plus it's hard to compare two machines that are generations apart.

So my position is:  The poll is flawed with out a both button.

NeXT Cube hands down, although I remember quite clearly drooling over the g4 Cube when it came out!

For me its the G4 Cube - and not just only 'cause i like PPC  :D . The Desing is (as much as i can tell having both machines seen only in photographs    ) not as much a "brick" as the NeXT Cube. I for myself think the "PizzaBox" NeXTStation is the best Hardwarecasing  they made and clearly one of the best ever made.

could you expand on that a little? i'm very pleased with the design of the nextstation. and without the dimension board, the cube seems to be a much less efficient use of space. also, im curious what makes the ns one of the best ever made. i did notice it seems well made, easy to open, and very rugged if thats what you had in mind.

Now this is more like it, for the "cube" look.  I wonder how it would look in black, with a NeXT logo on each side instead of the apple one, or mabey better yet just a NeXT logo on the front.  An oldie but goodie for those who have not seen it before.

Well what terms do you apply in order to value casedesings in general? Clearly there is aesthetics - the slim box just looks great - the proportions are extremly well done, compare with other computercasings.
The design fits the purpose extremly well, think of the cooling ribs for the powersupply wich are part of the case (i dont think i've seen something like that until now). I like the part where it consists only of two parts wich are extremly easy to open (ok there are many more of these out there but also many who don't so it's worth mentioning) except for the screw (winner in easy opening is definitively the indigo2s case - no screws at all  :D  - but if it's open thats where the mess starts)

These are just a few thoughts wich came in mind, i'm sure one could describe it better than that.

And i admit; until now i haven't that many computers to compare to - just about 13 i guess  :D  and a few i've seen somwhere else

That is a great cube case in the second pic.  I did not know they offered such an upgrade for the cube.  Much closer to what I was thinking of.  Here is a link to the case for those interested.

I'm going w/ the NeXT Cube. Although I love the G4 Cube for many reasons too.

But quite simply - the NeXT Cube was the greatest LEAP in technology [both hardware & software] in the history of computers.

History will ultimately view this object in it's proper perspective - it is THE most dramatic and elegant statement of "intelligent life" on this planet ever created!

I challenge anyone here - to dispute this

I am interested in hearing more about why you think this kenjay.  What do you consider to be the "great technological leaps" that were embodied in the NeXT cube.  Was it the cube shape, the magnesium structural components, the use of an OD, NS's use of OOP?  I am serious about hearing what you have to say about this, given your great knowledge of everything NeXT.

In 1989, when Steve Jobs was badgered over delays to the launch of NeXT ... he said [it all]:

"Late? This computer is five years ahead of its time."

Yeah, I can't really choose between them (I have each):

1. NeXTcube runs NextStep - huge leap forward in the field of application development, and thus in services to the user (the Librarian is such a cool app.); beats the pants off X windows (& of course the abomination from Seattle).

2. PowerCube - great space-saving HW that is still useful to this day (end of 2006) in that it can run the latest version of OS X (descendent of NS, though lacking some of the great 'services'), takes 1.5GB RAM, and has aftermarket upgrades to over 1GHz G4 processors...

The Mac Cube is too cute; it's little, it's curved, it's see-through..  It's like a teenage girl - cute, sweet, fun to be with, but there's just not much there.

The NeXT Cube is the opposite; it's large, it's square, it's expandable via a true Backplane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backplane), it ran UNIX on your desk in a time when UNIX was Big-Iron material.  WYS on your screen was WYG on your printer.  That was remarkable.

The NeXT is #1 because the of the gap between it and it's #2 was so great.

Here's what SGI (http://www.futuretech.blinkenlights.nl/pi4d30_4d35.html) and Sun (http://www.sunshack.org/data/sunpix_sun4.html) had to offer at the time.  Good stuff, but just not as slick.

The Mac is just another Mac.  I believe the LC series was of similar or less physical volume..  Slot-loading media, built in sound, video, etc..  Expansion slot, could run DOS..  Yawn..[/url]

Note the PowerMac Cube does not have built-in video: it has an AGP slot for a graphics card, though the card does need to be of a somewhat smaller size in order to physically fit...

Thank goodness that OS X did inherit much of the legacy of NextStep through Apple's enlightened purchase...

Cheers,
