Now that Sun is releasing the source to Java over the next year, any chance it could be ported to NS? Talk about breathing new life into the system... Of course who knows how fast it will run :)

Java and a port of Firefox would be very cool indeed to run on Intel and SPARC/PA

A couple things that will assure this will never happen:

* Limited legal availability of NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP
* Limited legal availability of compilers
* Limited availability of black hardware
* Tons of libraries to port
* Small userbase
* The hardware and software isn't getting any younger

"NeXTStep/Sun JDK 1.0.2
The effort to port Sun's JDK to the NeXT platform is ongoing. The project began late in '95 with an intial port made by Dave Griffiths of the alpha release. This did not include the AWT (Abstract Window Toolkit) but got as far as being able to self-compile. The port built entirely as a Project Builder project, largely because Sun had done some horrible proprietory make things. The beta release saw Sun move to the standard gnu make (gmake) and Bill Bumgarner migrated Dave's work to this release."

Also,

ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/NeXT/BlackJava.0.1.N.s.gnutar.gz.crypt

I imagine this is 68K code.  I'm not a Java person (just getting my feet wet with Eclipse and some Hello World-quality code) but if the source is there, and with Project Builder running on 1GHz + machines, it should be a doable thing to get something happening.

Though, if the source has been available since ~'95, wouldn't this have been tackled before now?[/quote]

With Mustang going GPL, it's probably a better idea to start there.

Old thread but I wonder if this has gone any further.  I wonder if anyone thought about porting J2ME rather than the standard desktop version of the VM.  A NeXTStation Turbo has about the same processor and memory as a PalmOS semi-modern device so the "micro edition" of java would be the way to go IMHO.
