Hi All,
I always wanted to own NeXT machine but when these things were popular I was in college and never had the funds to own one. Finally I disovered the world of Virtualization with WMWare 5.5 workstation. After successfully intalling Linux Mandriva 2007 PowerPack I would like to finally play with NeXT software - OpenStep 4.2. I have Development CD ISO as well as all the required images for floppies. I also managed to obtain Custom Build Device Driver image floppy created by Laurent Julliard. I came across a document on the web that shows how to install OpenStep 4.2 on WMware. The problem is I'm getting an error by NeXY Mach Operating System:
Load of /etc/mach_init, errno 2, trying /etc/init
Load of /etc/init failed, errno 2
Please see attached image for details...
(Hmmm looks like I can't attach image to this email)
Ok Here is what I have done I created new virtual Machine:
1) Virtual Machine Configuration - CUSTOM (Radio button)
2) Format - NEW - WORKSTATION 5 (Radio button)
3) Guest Operation System - OTHER (Radio button)
4) Version - OTHER (Dropdown)
5) Created Virtual Machine name and setup directory
6) 64MB of RAM set
7) Do not use a network connection (for now anyway)
8) I/O Adapter types - SCSI Adapters - BusLogic (radio button)
9) Created new virtual disk type - IDE (radio button)
10) Disksize - 2GB and created the disk file
11) The HD and CDROM were set up as follows:
Hard Disk ( IDE 0:0)
CD-ROM (IDE 0:1) ----> Attached OS 4.2, Intel, Developer image
FDloppy ---> Attached OS 4.2 Install Disk image
12) I started the VM machine
13) installing OS4.2 using -v option
14) Once I got prompted to insert device driver disk, I have supplied the custom build disk that has (Intel PIIX PCI EIDE/ATAPI Device Controller (v4.03))
15) For both Hard Disk and CDROM drivers I stalled using:
Intel PIIX PCI EIDE/ATAPI Device Controller (v4.03)
16) Added additional driver for floppy disk
17) I'm now in the stage were I get asked to install additional driver or proceed further without any additional drivers - so I hit option (1)
18) Now I see graphical NeXT Mach Operating System window with OpenStep Booting. It checks for ATAPI 0 &ATAPI 1 just fine but then the OS4.2 gives the above mention errors...at this point I'm stuck and I don't know how to proceed.
I tried different HD and CDROM driver as mentioned by Tomas Slivnik in his guide using "Primary/Secondary(Dual) EIDE and ATAPI Device Controllers" but in the end I get the same results....
can anyone help please ?
Thanks!!!
PS: How do I attach images to my posts - uploading them
