After upgrading NS 3.3 to OS 4.2 on my Turbo Color slab, I was looking in the UpdatedFiles directory and noticed the old WM binary.

Based on another user's post, it sounds like upgrading from 3.3 --> 4.2 results in a different end state than just installing 4.2, in that the old libs are still present?
I also noticed that old NextStep apps ran at nearly the same speed as before, while OpenStep apps tended to chug (as expected).
Well, if Workspace Manager is now OS, perhaps swapping it back to the NS version would improve performance?

The binary lives at /usr/lib/NextStep/Workspace.app/WM.app/WM
I booted into single user, mv'd the 4.2 version to a new nanme, and copied in the 3.3 version.
This took the version of Workstpace from 379 back to 374.6.

This has improved the speed of the menus, of loading icons, and scrolling. It's still a bit slower than "native" NS 3.3, but for a simple change I'm happy with the improvement.
I've not found any issues with this setup in the past 2 days. OS and NS apps still run together fine. (I'm posting this on the Slab from OmniWeb 3!)

Now I wonder if there are any other pieces of the environment that could be swapped out to "restore" performance?

Thanks,

-Jason

Hello: Cool stuff, you may noticea bit of performance bump maxing out the ram to 128Mb :) on the Turbo , I have some 32Mb Simms for $1 a MB :) so you would swap your 2 16 for the 2 * 32Mb simms. Or you may have some 32Mb Fast Page Mode 70NS either parity or non parity. 60NS actually register at 100NS for some reason.  Also I have had mixed results with EDO Ram , weirdly I've had 2 EDO simms work in the past by alternating slots with matching FPM ram in terms of both being  32Mb and 70Ns. Some members have 128Mb of EDO working as well.
A lot of cool apps there ,are you using monster shelf?
