So has the case been chromed, or is that just from polishing the magnesium case itself?

No chrome plating, just polished.  It's similar to the original polished NeXTcube(s) that were done by a PC case modder named Cold Dog.

The modder spent about 30 hours hand polishing the cube in his bathroom (no, I'm not kidding).

Since the slab top is also magnesium under the "skin", you could polish it up in the same way.  Then you could always cover it back up to return it to "normal" appearance.

Not into the crome "bling" thing myself, but to each his own.
