Does NS/OS for intel support the hardware present in mini/micro itx motherboards?  The ones I have used before are all based on via processors and components, like the old EPIA 5000 or ML series stuff.  Would the core components work, such as the IDE and onboard video?  I expect that the features like the s-video out, and the onboard lan may not work, but is this even possible?  I currently do not have any on hand to try it with, so figured I would get some guidance before attempting to acquire one.

And just for the record .. i AM NOT going to put it in a gutted NeXT case, so everyone breath easy. ;)

I guess another option would be to load linux on the machine, and just run NS/OS in a virtual machine, such as vmware.  Prefer to have it run native, but I guess in the end it really does not matter.

From what I can see, even late Intel boards work, not sure of some of the really late LGA 775 boards work, but I know Intel 865 & 875 socket 478 ones do.  Can you get 865 mini ATX boards?

DFI made some based on the i855 and i915 chipset, but they are setup to run Pentium M or Celeron M processors, which can be expensive.  For the price of the motherboard, power supply, hard disk, CPU and memory, I can get the low end IntelMacMini.

Don't think you'll have any luck with a mini, my MBP borks on the OPENSTEP bootloader about 3 seconds into booting, not sure if this might be a memory size issue as MBP has 1gb, so maybe if I pulled some it might be OK, I think my MBP has got 1 simm though.  But then I think I'm going to come across the same problem as BeOS, the Be bootloader gets to the license screen but you can't accept the damn thing as the KB or mouse are not working, don't think BeOS & OS 4.2 support USB keyboards/mice.

I've been looking to buy an IBM Thinkpad A31P for work which uses a socket 478 Penitum IV M, when I looked on eBay for a faster CPU they didn't strike me as expensive, iirc I saw a couple of 2.0ghz ones for about 20 pounds.

I've never used VIA chip sets, I tried OS 4.2 on an nVidia nForce II mobo and it didn't work, so I've always assumed Intel to be the best, in particular i440BX, GX and anything later avoiding the RamBus boards.

A M12000 did the job at least for the core components, but not video, no LAN. Worked with a riser card with Video & LAN.  Intruder

BeOS/Intel certainly supported USB mice.  I'm not sure I ever tried a USB KB though.

USB 1.x only though. And then only barely.
