Hi.
Was Oracle Server released on NeXTSTEP or OpenStep? I know NeXT released database kit adapters. I know that Oracle Server was released for Unix stations and also for DOS and Windows NT.
Thanks.
Have not used it by myself on NeXT, but am sure that Oracle (server) version 6 was running with NeXTstep on black hardware. There where quite some discussions going on in Usenet back in the 90s around Oracle's databases.
Here are two example post from the Usenet supporting my memory:

Oracle Version: Oracle 6.0.33.2.1 ( for NEXTSTEP 2.1 )
Hardware: NEXT Station Motorola
Operating System: NEXTSTEP 3.3

I am running an version 6 of Oracle on a an old NeXTStation, and have done so
successfully until I upgraded the NEXTSTEP Operating system from version 3.2 to
3.3 ( even though the Oracle version was developed for NEXTSTEP 2.1 )
With the NEXTSTEP upgrade which I belive had some upgrades of the Mach Kernel,
I suddenly had problems with the Oracle database.
This was obvious just running the SQL*DBA application as the following
transscript displays:
SQL*DBA: Version 6.0.33.2.1 - Production on Sat May 20 09:48:59 1995
Copyright (c) Oracle Corporation 1979, 1989. All rights reserved.
ORACLE RDBMS V6.0.33.2.1 - Production
SQLDBA> connect system/polarbear1
ORA-09751: pw_attachPorts: server call pws_attach failed.
SQLDBA>
The console output was:
May 20 09:49:21 localhost (Oracle helper)[1082]: pws_attach(oracle) fails for
process 5, port rights still out
I have tried to reinstall the Oracle from scratch but no improved result.
One thing I noticed in the reinstallation that the 'pws.daemon' (which is the
(Oracle helper) process ) was not relinked as most of the other executables in
the $(ORACLE_HOME)/bin directory had been !!
Is anybody still using Oracle on NEXTStations out there and have they any
problems with it running 3.3 of NEXTSTEP.
Any help would be appreciated !!!

PS: For Peanuts archive I tried reaching out to Oracle many years ago and asked if they could provide us packages and the permission to preserve and host the (at that time very outdated) NeXT versions of database, client and other software. While this approach worked well with other companies and developers, Oracle unfortunately did not support us with my request.

WinWorldPC Oracle 6.0 is only for DOS and Netware :/, And Version 7.0 like those Usenet posts say there is no NeXT version but are versions for other UN*X.

Good on you for trying and thank you for your answer :)
And another. :)

I don't think I've ever seen a copy for sale on eBay or anywhere else for that matter. Does anyone here own a copy? It would be interesting to see the documentation.
Everything I've read about Oracle v.7 never mentioned NeXT. V.7 was available for OS/2.
Would be interested to know if InterBase was ever released GA for NeXT? From these posts, I see there might have been a beta. I'm currently using v.3.3 on OpenServer 6 and would love to play with a version for NeXTSTEP.
I'll be installing Sybase on NeXTSTEP shortly. I'm using v.4.21a on Windows and v.4.20b on OS/2 and both database files are binary compatible and can be swapped. Highly doubtful, but I wonder if Sybase v4.1 database files for NeXT might also be cross platform. Sybase licensing can also be transferred between Windows and OS/2 servers.

Thanks for this Nitro.
QuoteSybase SQL Server
$3750 per single UNIX user; $115,480 unlimited users
A popular data server, both for older versions of NEXTSTEP and on other hardware platforms. NeXT bundles a DBKit adapter with NEXTSTEP for Sybase servers.
Sybase, 6475 Christie Ave., Emeryville, CA 94608.
Those licensing costs and that is after buying the hardware, but I guess it is all about productivity. Yes NeXT hardware was expensive but the fact that it came with a free SQL server as standard for the original models would have saved a bit of money.

Would like to read your feedback about using the dbkit adapters from NeXT to Windows/OS2 Servers.

Let us know how that install goes. I wouldn't mind a tutorial on how to get Sybase installed and running with EOF/dbkit, along with a basic guide/brief tour.

My experience for installing Sybase on NS3.3 (68k) was I had to remove the header bytes from the two floppies before installing it.
I also had to download another word processor because of the file format for the manual on how to install it was not .rtf, I can't remember the NeXT word processor but it might have been write now ?!?!.
I didn't get that far with installing it in Previous and getting it up and running to start building a database.
I got to that stage too. Unfortunately it's like a lot of old software and lacks selfdocumentation.
So I never got from installed, to running. Not even running and able to connect with its own CLI tools.
I'd really like to play with the full EOF install at some point.
Could you make a disk image of that? It would be a shame to lose these things to time.

I'd like to be able to do that but unfortunately it's a legal risk that I won't take. The next owner (no pun intended) can decide what they want to do with it.
Well at least make a private copy of the disk so it doesn't bitrot. You can pass on that copy to the next owner.
Quote from: Nitro on February 19, 2025, 01:37:28 PMAlso, I dug up a sealed copy of Oracle SQL Forms for NEXTSTEP 2.1.
Nice. Can we get a file listing of the contents?

I don't have any plans to open it. Maybe Oracle has information about it on their site.
